We have the procedure for becoming a bond-slave or bondservant in our reading. We see the direct connection that Paul makes to this procedure in his relationship to Jesus. 

Today, we are talking about making bald spots on your head for the dead. Well, actually, we aren't talking about that, we are talking about youth group... 

Let's talk about false prophets for a minute. The Lord here is real clear on what to do with them. It's not the same for us today however. 

Was BBQ invented here? It seems like that may be the case as God is very specific about where sacrifices are to be made.

We need to tell the stories of what God has done for our children and grandchildren. They weren't there, but we want them to maintain and expand the blessings of faith. 

What does God want from us? Moses tells the Israelites what He wants from them, and we see a direct parallel to us in the New Testament. 

We are reminded of the danger of self-righteousness here and it's interesting to see how the Lord helps them to guard against it. 

Why does the Lord test us? One of the reasons is given here in our reading today, it's to prepare us for prosperity and blessing. 

We see an example of free will and sovereignty in this passage. God has given them the land, but they need to go in, take possession and do it God's way in order to receive all the blessings of it. 

Let's talk for a minute about the Greatest Commandment. It's in our reading today, and what's interesting is what's before and after it in this chapter. 

Here we see how Deuteronomy gets its name. It comes from 'duet" which means "two" or "second" because it's the second time the law is given. It's now given to this new generation of Israelites.

One of the reasons we as Christians, read the Old Testament is given to us in our reading today. It's so that we would become wise and understanding in life. 

There's two perspectives on what we are reading today. One is to see Jesus in the passage. The other is to see what God does sometimes across generations. 

Deuteronomy 2

There's a story within the story Moses is telling the Israelites as they are preparing to finally go into the Promised Land. it's a story that describes the power of God's Word still at work today. 

If you're a leader of any kind, you'll want to pay attention to this chapter, as Moses gives a wonderful example of the kind of thing that a leader needs to do when taking action. 

The patriarchal system that God setup is interesting to consider, especially in situations like the one here with these women. 

There's something troubling in the end of our passage. After the Lord giving space to the Levites and making provision for justice, the Lord declares a truth about shedding innocent blood. 

This is why we have maps in the back of our Bibles. It's for passages like this one. It reminds us that God is not ethereal or abstract, but in the center of reality. 

There's two great examples here for us as Christians. First, it's keeping a record of moves. Second, it's recognizing the agency we have in what we permit and what we restrict. 

There's a gem of a verse for parents in the middle of our reading. 

We are wrestling with the genocide in this chapter, considering the judgments of God being perfect, and the reality that we live after the cross of Jesus Christ. 

Today, we are seeing how vows are cancelled, which at first can seem misogynistic. However, it's helpful to see the situation from the Biblical perspective. 

The chapter division falls in a perfect spot for Gentile Christians, because we can see all the feasts in one chapter and see which ones Jesus has still yet to fulfill. 

The Lord isn't being redundant here by repeating the feasts and festivals. He's describing the offerings that are to accompany the feasts. This has implications for us today.

We are looking at the transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua in this chapter and marveling at how God does it compared to how we normally do it. 

Moses is doing a second census and it gives us an opportunity to talk about counting people and when it's appropriate. 

Is it right what Phineas did? Was God right in rewarding him? Are we supposed to do the same things today? 

There are two important aspects to consider in Balaam's final prophecies. What God has accomplished within their society and how non-believers can see what God has done.

Every time Balaam attempts to curse, God turns it into blessing. It reminds us of what God has done for us through the blessing of Jesus.

We are talking about Balaam's donkey today. It's a donkey. A donkey that talks.

Today, we are thinking about the bronze serpent lifted up on the pole and how it brought healing to the people who had been bitten. 

We are talking about the waters of Meribah today and the picture that God was trying to paint by Moses simply speaking to the rock. 

We are talking about the red heifer today and how it impacts what's clean and unclean. 

Over and over we see the Lord emphasizing how a portion of these foods and offerings are for the priests and their families. Paul makes the connection to us in the New Testament. 

This chapter can be scary, as they have to step back and allow the Lord to make his decision for leader known. 

There are two big warning flags for us in this passage today. they are disrespecting authority and complaining. 

We are talking about the tassels that the Lord instructed them to put on their clothing to serve as a reminder of his Word. 

It's not fun to read this chapter and realize how similar we are sometimes to the Israelites...

We need the eyes of faith, to see the future the way that Joshua and Caleb did and not the way that the other 10 did. 

there's a gold mine here when it comes to family dynamics, leadership, spirituality and so forth... let's dig in! 

In today's reading, we can see the difference between "I won't" and "I can't" in the complaints that are made to the Lord. it's interesting to consider how the complaints are made and how the Lord responds. 

Two topics from our reading today, we want to look at these trumpets a little bit and then consider Hobab, Moses's relative. 

It's easy to see the connection between the Israelites moving with the cloud and the way the Christian is led and guided by the Holy Spirit. 

The Lord's retirement plan for ministry is attractive. The work, the physical work is only between 25-50 years old. After that, you can assist, advise, teach, instruct, encourage, but let the younger generation have their turn. Fascinating. 

The Gershonites and the Mararites got carts for transporting their items in the tabernacle. The Kothathites didn't get any carts. That's similar to us today, sometime we can complain about what others have, not recognizing the privilege we have. 

The Nazarite vow is interesting. It's how a man with long hair can be holy! But, the blessing at the end of the chapter captures our attention, because this is how God's name (YHVH) is pronounced over the people.

It is a strange procedure where a suspected unfaithful spouse would have to drink this potion before the priest to reveal her guilt. It's so different from the way we think nature works, but maybe there is a connection between the microbiome and the spiritual realm. 

The wisdom of God is on display in these instructions. He's choosing families for these various responsibilities. It's economic, efficient and strengthens the family bonds. Brilliant! 

Over and over in this chapter God refers to the firstborn and it's good to consider his legal claim to the firstborn and how that relates to us as Christians. 

These instructions are interesting and many people have drawn out what the Lord is describing and say that it resembles a cross. 

So, here's the question for today. Why is this book called Numbers? I'll bet you can guess why. But, here's the thing, the name is deceptive, because that's not what it's about...

This, to me, is a chapter guarding against forward-sliding. This is the opposite of backsliding... check it out... 

There's a brief synopsis of the history of Israel in this chapter, although it's given in advance. What an encouragement for us to live in the full blessing given to us through Jesus. 

The brilliance and wisdom of God is on full display in this chapter as He's laying out the system of rest and reset for not just the people, but also the land. 

There's a lot in this chapter. I want to talk about the anointing oil though and how it obviously relates to us as Christians. 

Don't skim through this chapter thinking there's nothing for us as Christians in it. Certainly, this is the basis of their cultural events, and they mark significant events in their history, but they are also prophecy, and a field of rich study for us to understand what's in the future. 

The theme of respect is woven through this chapter in instructions about the sacrificial system. It speaks beautifully of the love and wisdom and grace of God.

There are severe consequences listed in this chapter. Much more severe than we have read so far. Up till now, an animal sacrifice would suffice... 

We are talking about holiness today, because that's the common theme in this chapter of laws on various topics.
