Sometimes, when we think of God's law, we consider it restrictive. It prevents us from doing what we want. Instead, we should look at the law as freeing. The law gives us direction to keep us and others safe. Following that direction frees us from doing what will harm us or others. God’s law protects life and is a ticket to life itself. It is the source of life and, therefore, the source of the psalmist’s joy. God’s law was not created as a measuring stick for goodness. It is not a religion, not a system of beliefs that are built on our achievement of righteousness and how good we are, and it is not meant to measure versus others. All God’s law points to Jesus and is fulfilled by Jesus.

Psalm 40 shows us David in patient waiting. Waiting for God to pull him up out of the muck and set him back on firm ground. He's waiting for God to throw him a rope. He realizes that he cannot bring himself out of his troubles on his own; he needs God's help and he's willing to be patient and fully rely on God to deliver him. What is patience? It’s the ability to wait for something without frustration.

The power of the promise is only guaranteed, in belief. A complete surrender. Holding on tight to new life in obedience to King Jesus.
