Enemies We Face, The, Part 1

Derek begins this four-week study by addressing the reality of two opposing spiritual kingdoms, which are at war with one another. These are the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. Using Scripture, Derek gives us a picture of levels of rulerships within Satan’s kingdom.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 2

Today Derek uses two passages to examine the origin of Satan, or Lucifer, who served God in heaven as an angel, but who became proud and was cast down. Derek gives a description of this created being who wanted to be above God and who then led a rebellion among the angels.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 3

Derek points out that Scripture speaks of “heavens” in the plural, and then gives us his understanding of the three divisions. God is in the third and highest heaven and Satan is in the second. Using the experience of Daniel, Derek reveals how demonic forces in the second heaven can actually hold up answers to prayers.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 4

Today we will look at what was going on in the spirit realm during Daniel’s twenty-one day fast. From the first day Daniel set his heart to seek God, the angel Gabriel was sent to speak with Daniel but was held back by demonic activity in the heavens. Michael the Archangel was sent to help Gabriel to get through. This story will bring clarity to our understanding of unseen things when we seek God.

Finishing this first week’s study, Derek highlights several areas by which Satan attempts to rule over men, beginning with rebellion, then pride. Satan’s two main ambitions are to dominate the whole human race, and to receive worship. Witchcraft, the natural religion of fallen man, permeates the whole human race.

Derek begins his study by looking at the connection between witchcraft and rebellion against God. Using the example of King Saul and the prophet Samuel, Derek shows us that when rebellion rejects the authority of God’s Word then witchcraft comes in.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 7

Today we look at the first of three aspects of witchcraft and its working within the church. The operation of witchcraft as a work of the flesh has three key action words. It seeks to manipulate, intimidate, and dominate. Derek begins by giving examples of how these work in everyday life.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 8

Derek finishes looking at how the works of the flesh operate by manipulation and intimidation. He then begins looking at witchcraft in its second aspect, through such things as spells and curses. Derek uses the example of Balaam from the Old Testament, who was what we might call a witch doctor.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 9

Today we look first at divination, or fortune-telling, which is the knowledge element of witchcraft. Second comes sorcery, or occult activity, which is usually done through objects such as potions, charms, music or drugs. The third area of witchcraft is that which works within the church to obscure the revelation of the reality of Jesus Christ crucified.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 10

Derek finishes this week’s study by looking at how witchcraft can gain control within the church through legalism and the works of the flesh. When this happens, we find we are no longer trusting in the supernatural grace and power of God. Instead, we are trusting what we can do in our own strength.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 11

Derek begins this week’s study on the spirit of antichrist by explaining the real meaning of the phrase. Its purpose is to exclude the Messiah, and then replace Him with a false messiah. In time, humanity will be forced to choose between the real and the false.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 12

Derek reveals through Scripture that there are three forms of antichrist. First, there are many antichrists, and in the course of history many have appeared on the world’s stage. Second, there is the Antichrist who will arise at the end of the age to dominate the human race for a brief period. The third form is the spirit of antichrist, which operates through those who deny that Jesus is the Messiah.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 13

Today we look at men who claimed to be the Messiah and led many Jews astray. Then Derek delves into the origin of Mohammed and the religion of Islam. He explains some of its teachings, warning of the dangers it presents, revealing Islam’s denial that Jesus is the Son of God.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 14

In this session Derek finishes looking at the spirit of Antichrist, which he began yesterday. Then he begins to deal with the person known as the antichrist. He notes that the “falling away” or apostasy must occur first. This apostasy a deliberate rejection of revealed truth, and it will open the door for this man.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 15

Derek turns to the book of Revelation to look at the Lion, who is the Lamb, to contrast Him to the Antichrist who is identified as a wild beast. He then comments on the work of the beast on earth with most of humanity worshiping him, and how he will persecute the saints.

Enemies We Face, The, Part 16

Derek begins this final talk by looking at the end-time church in the book of Revelation to describe who are overcomers. Jesus spoke to the seven churches in the early chapters, giving promises to everyone who overcomes. God has made it possible to overcome and He expects us to overcome. But we must do our part.

Today we look at weapons useful in our warfare. These weapons are not carnal but spiritual, reaching deep within the battlefield of the mind. We must guard against division in the church, and know and proclaim the whole of God’s Word. Are you ready to fight?

Enemies We Face, The, Part 18

Derek continues to look at what is needed for the church to be victorious over its enemies. All of God’s Word must be proclaimed and taught—for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. Humbling ourselves with fasting is another important weapon the church must utilize.

In Ephesians Paul tells us to take up the whole armor of God. Derek highlights the fact that it is the believers who must take it up, put it on, and also use the weapon of “all prayer.” Derek then shows us the need to use the supernatural gifts of God to demonstrate the reality of God’s power. We proclaim the gospel while confronting the powers of darkness.

Derek finishes this series by speaking about the power of praise to silence the enemy and the avenger. God has given this ability to our mouths—to use words to praise Him and to proclaim His Word over all situations. As we continual to do this, victory is assured. Jesus told His disciples that if they loved Him they would keep His words and that He and His Father would come to indwell them. Derek begins this new study by looking at who God is. Behind the entire universe there is a person, a Creator, who is also a Father. If we can embrace this, we will have a totally new perspective on ourselves, our lives, and everything that goes on around us. All things, including you, have their source and fulfillment in God.

Today Derek explains that God is behind and in control of the whole universe. He controls the stars, human history, the nations, and our individual lives. More important still, God has a plan for each one of our lives and He is working these out just as surely as He is controlling every other area of the universe.

Using Romans 8:29–30 as his text, Derek begins to look at the seven successive stages of God’s plan for those who love Him, who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior, and who have become members of God’s family. The first stage in this study to contemplate God’s foreknowledge. He knows everything about each of us. Derek here delves into the psalms to illustrate this by examining how we were formed. God knew every process our bodies would pass through and when each member would be formed. In like manner, He has a plan for each of us.

In this second stage Derek stresses that because God foreknew us, He chose us for His own purposes. He knows who we are and what we can be. As we say yes, He enables us to walk in His grace to fulfill those purposes. He foreknew you and chose you because He knows what you can accomplish together.

To be predestined means that God has arranged in advance the course that your life is to follow. Derek makes clear you are not an accident looking for a place to happen. Instead, you are part of an eternal plan. You’re destined to become a member of God’s family, and it all takes place through His grace and for His glory.

Derek warns against the most common hindrance to being led by the Holy Spirit. This is called legalism. Do not seek to achieve righteousness with God by observing any law or set of rules. As we finish this study on the Holy Spirit, Derek addresses two kinds of unions, one in the flesh and one in the Spirit. These are the ones who are eagerly awaiting that time when they will be given a crown of righteousness. Then Derek challenges us with this simple question: “Are you qualified?”

For what reason should Christians be longing for Christ’s appearing? The first is that at His return our personal salvation will be completed. Our corruptible, dead bodies will be changed into glorified bodies, just like the glorified body of Jesus.

Derek points out that the return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom is the only hope for suffering humanity. In today’s study Derek points out that all creation is looking forward to the return of Jesus when the sons of God will be revealed in all their glory. When Adam and Eve fell, creation was subjected to the circumstances of sin. But at Christ’s return, redemption will encompass all creation as well as man.

Throughout the New Testament God’s requirements for holiness are nearly always linked with the anticipation of the Lord’s return. This is echoed by the exhortation of the writers of the New Testament. It is the strongest single motivation for holy living, and if we are truly motivated in that way, then we will live holy lives.

Today Derek speaks about the bride who has made herself ready for Christ. She has clothed herself in fine linen, which are the righteous acts of the saints. We have been created in Christ Jesus for good works, each strand of which will make up our clothing. It is up to each one of us to seek the Lord about what He has for us to do.

Jesus said there would be signs taking place, which will lead up to the end times. Derek reveals how they are present even today. As we see these things happening, we are exhorted to be on the alert, guarding our hearts and praying so that we may be ready for that day.

Derek shares one specific sign Jesus said would herald the end of the present age and His return in glory. That sign was the proclamation of the gospel of the kingdom to all nations in the whole world. It is Priority Number 1—to move out ahead of the forces of evil and carry out this task with great urgency.

Derek finishes this study by pointing out that all nations will have the gospel preached to them—and that includes the Jewish people. At some point the full number of the Gentiles will be brought into the kingdom and the hardening of the Jewish hearts will end. That will open wide the door of salvation to the Jews. Just what is the gospel of the kingdom? Derek points out the need for the gospel message to be presented fully. Derek uses the experience of his wife, Lydia’s, death to expose us to the reality of this temporary life. Instead, we must hang on to the strength and truth of the eternal. We should be willing to give up what we have here in this life, trusting that God cares and has a plan for us. In the midst of all that is impermanent and fading, it is only the Word of God that is enduring and permanent, unshakable, unmovable, and eternal.

In looking at the first commandment, Derek asks, “Who (or what) is your God?” As Christians, we must be totally committed and loyal to God; He tolerates no rivals. We cannot love God and continue to love the world with its materialism, rebellion, sin, and self-pleasing. If God is in first place, your source, you will have a solid foundation.

As Derek finishes this study, he shows us, from the book of Colossians, that all things of God are available to us in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the image of God and all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him. To begin this two-week study, Derek delves into the foundational difference of a person’s spiritual experience: is it based upon your will or your emotions? It is a person’s will that decides to serve God. Man is a three part being—made of spirit, soul, and body—and it is in the soul that makes decisions.

In today’s study Derek looks at two decisions made by David in Psalm 103. These decisions are to bless the Lord and to remember His benefits. “To bless the Lord” is to adopt a right attitude toward God—in humility, reverence, acknowledgment, and bowing. “To forget not” means we remember the blessings of the Lord; we focus our mind on the Lord’s benefits.

Derek teaches on making the decision to praise God in all circumstances, no matter whether we feel like it or not. Praise brings satisfaction to the ones who have made that willful decision. Have you decided to bless the Lord at all times and to have His praise continually in your mouth?

To repent means to change your mind (this is a decision), and then you must go in a different direction (this is the action you take). Remorse is an emotion, and not a decision. Repentance determines our destiny for time and eternity.

Derek finishes this week by stressing the importance of responding to God when He speaks to you. Repeatedly ignoring or sidestepping His promptings can cause you to be rejected. This is not God’s will for you.

Derek continues this week on the necessity of making decisions. Today he looks at the importance of forgiving others so that we will be forgiven by God. If we do not forgive why should God to forgive us and answer our prayers? Remember that forgiveness is not based on feelings; it is based on obedience to God’s Word.

Today Derek looks at character trait of humility, which is the decision to humble yourself. God tells us to humble ourselves and then He will exalt us. Whatever our circumstances are, we have the ability to choose whether we will take the road to humility, as Jesus did, or lower ourselves by being prideful in whatever form it may take.

Derek reads from the words of Moses to the people of Israel as they were preparing to cross into the Promised Land. They could choose life and blessing or death and cursing; Moses advised them to choose life. Later, Jesus presents us with choice. Will we choose Jesus (and life), or will we choose Satan, the thief, who comes to steal, kill, and destroy? We each have that choice.

Derek confronts us with a decision today; whether we will choose blessings or curses. Blessings come upon us when we hear God and obey what He says. Curses come from not hearing and obeying. It is up to you to make the decision which course to take in your life.

In finishing this study, Derek explains how Christ became a curse for us when He hung upon the cross. He exhausted every curse for each of us so we would not have to bear them. Then He gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the finished work of Christ on the cross and receive the blessings in our lives as a result.

In this week’s study, Derek focuses on patience and what the Bible has to say about it. He distinguishes between patience and perseverance in Scripture. Perseverance implies strength, effort, endurance, and pressing forward. Whereas patience is essentially waiting. Remember, God acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.

Today Derek speaks about God’s patience. God waits—and doesn’t act on things immediately. God has a time for everything and knows when and how to deal with people. Using as examples of waiting, Derek examines the lives of Pharaoh and Paul. This brings out our need to be patient with other people.

Raising Lazarus from the dead is the example Derek uses today to show us the value of waiting. If it was important for Jesus to wait—to get God’s direction before proceeding—imagine how important it is for us, too. Timing can be extremely crucial in all that we do if we want success.

In today’s teaching Derek takes a look at the lives of Abraham, Moses, and David. We will see how they were able to grow in patience. As we see their successes as well as their failures, we can learn from their experiences.

Derek finishes this study on patience with five principles for growing patience in our lives. First, we recognize that patience is essential; second, we submit to God’s discipline; third, we learn to see God’s hand in frustrations that come our way. Fourth, whenever we fail in respect of patience, we confess it as sin and repent. And fifth, we cultivate a sensitivity to God’s timing.

Eternity, by definition, denotes that which is outside of time or above time or beyond time—something that has no beginning and no end. God is an eternal being. In Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, there were four types of soil, only one of which produced lasting results. That was the good soil. Scripture tells us that the Lord laid upon Jesus the iniquity of us all. What type of sin? Murder? Fornication? Maybe not. But we all have turned to our own way—we have been self-pleasers, living by our own standards. We need God’s forgiveness. And once forgiven, God tells us they are remembered no more.

Reconciliation with God also brings reconciliation with our fellow man. In Colossians Paul assures us that now there is neither slave nor free, circumcised or uncircumcised, or barbarian, but Christ is all, and is in all. All barriers have been done away with in the new creation in Jesus.

Today, we examine Jesus’ most frequently used title of Himself, Son of Man, and see how He identifies Himself with humankind.

Isaiah writes to us about “the suffering servant,” who is recognized by biblical scholars to be Jesus Christ Himself. Not only was He the Son of Man, depicting human frailty, but He also took upon Himself our infirmities, our transgressions and our punishment.

Jesus became our substitute by taking all of the evil that was due to our rebelliousness and sin—that we might receive all the good that was due to His eternal righteousness and complete obedience. What an exchange took place!

Today, Derek begins to reveal specific ways in which “the divine exchange” took place – Jesus bearing all the evil that we might receive all of the blessings that was due to Him. The first way that Derek mentions is: Jesus bore our punishment that we might have God’s forgiveness, or peace.

The second exchange, which Derek presents today, is that Jesus became the sin offering, or the guilt offering, for us. He bore our sin in His body on the tree that we might be wrapped in the robe of righteousness that Isaiah has written to us about.

When Jesus died on the cross, He took all the evil consequences due to the rebellion of the whole human race. One aspect of that has to do with curses and blessings. Because Christ was made sin for us, He was also made a curse. Why? So that we could partake of all the blessings.

Part of the curse that Jesus bore for us has to do with mental and physical sickness. Since He bore these things in His body, physical healing has been obtained for us. The fact that “we were healed” is always in the past tense. It has already happened.

Christians often have an incorrect view of poverty. Derek shows us that poverty is part of the curse. In fact, on the cross Jesus experienced absolute poverty: He was hungry, thirsty, naked and in want of all things. His suffering made way for us to receive the abundance that was due to Him.

Derek explains today the meaning of rejection. It is the feeling of being unwanted, unworthy and not really belonging. As the sin of humanity came upon Jesus on the cross, God averted His eyes. He could not look on sin. That was for our good—that we might receive God’s total acceptance.

Scripture tells us that the wages of sin is death. This inevitable consequence was cancelled on the cross, as Jesus died in our place. When we accept this truth, we find that it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us. He is resurrected—and so will we be. He died our death that we might have His life.

The absolute heart of the gospel is this: First, Christ died; second, He was buried; and third, He was raised on the third day. There is one outward act required by God that enables us to be identified with Jesus in these three phases: the act of baptism in water. Have you been baptized?

Yesterday’s message presented the heart of the gospel, found in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. What is our Christian experience? Paul tells us that God has made us alive, God has raised us up and God has seated us with Christ. Through our identification with Jesus, we are born again to a living hope.

As Derek proceed with his teaching on our identification with Christ, he points out that the Father sent Christ. The Father gave Jesus the words to speak and God performed His works through Jesus. To see Jesus was to see the Father. In the same way, Jesus has sent us out.

Derek shows us today that we are also identified with the ascension life and ministry of Jesus in heaven. When Jesus ascended to heaven He entered into two unique ministries: where He rules as King and intercedes as Priest. In this way also, we are invited to identify ourselves with Jesus.

The wisdom of this world, as Derek well knows, will never take the place of the hidden wisdom of God, which will only come when one becomes a new creation in Christ Jesus. Then the door will open up for us to search out this hidden wisdom.

Over the past three weeks, Derek has been showing us how the concept of identification is the key that opens up for us a full understanding of the purpose of the death of Jesus and so enables us to enter into all that He obtained for us through His death.

That someone is Satan, who has a rival kingdom in the heavens. Our enemies are persons without bodies; we can’t see them, but we need to know how to deal with them.

In this series on God’s abundance it is vital to see how much we need Him. Only through revelation from God can we see the depth of our need and, as we do, restoration will begin to come bringing His abundance. God’s plan is that it will bring praise, honor, and glory to Him.

What does abundance really mean? Today Derek delves into the explanation of abundance, revealing that it means we have all our own needs met and something left over to give others. Jesus could feed a multitude with a few loaves and fish. He also paid taxes by supplying the coins from the mouth of a fish. That was abundance.

Our faith for abundance must be based on principles related to God’s promises. Derek’s first principle is that God’s provision is made available through His promises, so we must know what these promises are. The second principle is that these promises given by God are our inheritance. They belong to us and we must take hold of them.

Jesus is the channel and it is only through Him that we receive anything from God. God gave specific instructions for the children of Israel to follow if they wanted His covenant blessings. The first requirement was to listen to the voice of the Lord and to obey. In today’s message, Derek shares about a revelation he had from the Lord. Using Scripture the Lord presented a picture of Jesus on the cross and revealed how He became a curse for us. All grace was made to abound to us through this perfect work of Christ.

The demonstration of our faith pleases God, and as we exercise faith in seeking Him, He will reward it. Today Derek looks at our debt to Israel. What is the position of the Christian church in relation to the Jewish nation? Throughout much of history Jews have been persecuted in the name of Christ, and Derek comments on what needs to be done to undo the effects of these experiences.

At the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus gave instruction that we were to go and make disciples of all nations. He gave His authority and power to the Church to accomplish this task, and it has not been rescinded. Today we are reminded of this and exhorted to join in this work to reach the world.

We must be wise in our use of all that we have by investing in people—the souls God cares about and for whom Jesus gave His life.
