From Ancient Parable to Modern Warning

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the powerful parable of the rich man and Lazarus as shared in Luke 16:19-31. Join us as we explore the themes of eternal justice and divine compassion that Jesus communicates through this compelling narrative.

We'll discuss the stark contrast between the unnamed rich man, adorned in luxury yet blind to the suffering at his doorstep, and Lazarus, the poor man whose faith ultimately places him at Abraham's side. This story serves as a poignant reminder that our earthly choices echo into eternity.

Drawing parallels to modern-day scenarios, we reflect on how we often navigate through warning signs in life, whether they pertain to our health, relationships, or spiritual well-being. Are we heeding these signs, or are we, like the rich man, choosing to ignore the opportunities to extend love and generosity to those around us?

Tune in as we unpack the deeper message of Jesus' teaching—the good news of spiritual opportunity and salvation through faith. We'll challenge ourselves to examine our own lives: Are we living with open eyes and hearts, ready to respond to the needs in front of us? Are we truly living out our faith through action?

With reflections on empathy and compassion, this episode encourages listeners to see people through God's eyes, fostering a life that honors Him and shares His love with the world. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with a message that continues to resonate across the ages, inviting us all to live with purpose and perspective.
</itunes:summary>

The Joy of Finding the Lost

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In the episode, Pastor Travis discusses the agony of loss and the joy of restoration, sharing a personal story about briefly losing his son at a truck stop to illustrate the feeling of panic and subsequent relief.

The episode focuses on the parables from Luke 15, specifically the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin. Pastor Travis explains that Jesus told these stories to the Pharisees and scribes who were grumbling about him eating with tax collectors and "sinners". He emphasizes that God's love is not "safe or stingy," but rather it "risks comfort, reputation—even scandal—for the sake of recovery". The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to seek out those who are on the margins, embrace discomfort by associating with those they might normally avoid, and celebrate when a person turns back to God. He also offers a message of hope for anyone who feels lost, assuring them that no distance is too great for God to find them. The core message is that "God rejoices over one—just one—who turns toward home".

</itunes:summary>

From Car Karaoke to "Save Us!" - Finding True Excitement in God

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
Ever belted out a song in the car and felt totally lost in the moment? Pastor Travis kicks off this engaging episode of "Nuts and Bolts of the Bible" with a humorous story about a Montreal man ticketed for singing too loudly, using it as a springboard to explore what truly grabs our attention and makes us want to shout.

He then draws a parallel to the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It wasn't about a catchy tune, but a moment of immense excitement as people laid down coats and waved palm branches, shouting "Hosanna!" Travis unpacks this familiar word, revealing its powerful meaning: "Save us!"

The episode takes a relatable turn as Pastor Travis reflects on the fleeting nature of that initial excitement. Just days later, the same crowd who cried "Hosanna!" would be shouting "Crucify Him!" He honestly examines how we, too, can have powerful spiritual moments only to find ourselves falling short in our daily lives. Sharing a personal experience of navigating a house disaster, he confesses his own struggles with impatience and recognizes his constant need for God, even as a pastor.

Ultimately, this episode of "Nuts and Bolts of the Bible" offers a candid and encouraging message about Palm Sunday. It's not just a historical event, but a reminder to be honest about our need for a savior. Even when we mess up and our actions don't match our "Hosanna" shouts, Jesus still comes, offering grace, forgiveness, and a fresh start. Pastor Travis concludes with a heartfelt prayer, inviting listeners to embrace the true meaning of "Hosanna" and find hope in God's unfailing love.
</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>
“The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18).

That verse comes from the Apostle Paul, who was writing his mentee Timothy. Paul was in a Roman prison—and facing his own death.

By this point, Paul had faced many obstacles, in his calling to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yet—despite those obstacles, and pending death—Paul had assurance that God would bring him safely into God’s heavenly kingdom. I can relate.

Like most, I too have had my fair share of obstacles in my life. Some I had a hand in creating, and some I did not. Yet—upon a quick review of my life thus far—I’ve been incredibly blessed.

Despite many hardships, when I put them on a scale (both those deserved and those hardships of an imperfect world), they are not nearly as much as the side of the scale that holds my blessings. I am fortunate in that I can say that, throughout my life, it has always felt as though God has had my back.

That may not be the case for you. You may feel like you’ve been left out of the blessings possible in this life. I can understand that feeling as well, but let’s look again at the latter part of that verse from Apostle Paul which says that “the Lord will…bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom.” Why? How can Paul have such assurance? … In a word—Jesus.

Paul knew that believers in Jesus as the Son of God are assured of a future eternity spent in God’s heavenly kingdom. That truly is Good News.

Whether or not you feel like you’ve been rescued from every evil deed thus far, through your belief in Jesus, you can look forward to being brought safely into God’s heavenly kingdom.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
The episode explores themes of faith, belief, and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit as depicted in Acts 5:12-16. Pastor Travis begins with a personal childhood anecdote about being trapped in a dog kennel to illustrate the concept of being stuck in one's own form of captivity—symbolizing sin and disbelief. This story sets the stage for a discussion of the early church in Acts, where the apostles perform miraculous signs and wonders through the Holy Spirit.

The episode delves into the contrasting reactions of people to these events: on one hand, many respected the apostles but were hesitant to associate with them due to fear or misunderstanding; on the other hand, multitudes of believers were increasingly drawn to the faith, experiencing profound healing and transformation. Pastor Travis emphasizes that believers have been freed from their metaphorical cages through Jesus' sacrifice, while non-believers remain in darkness, afraid to confront their sin.

Throughout the episode, there's a strong call to action, encouraging listeners to place their faith in Jesus and not wait until it's too late, drawing a parallel to the missed supper from the opening story.
Growing Together

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In this episode, Pastor Travis delves into the theme of generosity and communal living as depicted in Acts 4:32-35. The episode opens with a parable about a farmer who shares his best wheat seeds with his neighbors, illustrating the benefits of communal effort and improvement. Reflecting on personal experiences of childhood reluctance to share, the speaker draws a parallel to modern attitudes towards sharing resources within the church community. The early Christians' practice of sharing everything, ensuring that no one was in need, is highlighted as a powerful example of spiritual unity and community growth. The episode critiques the contrast between early Christian generosity and today's often individualistic approach, suggesting that true contentment and fulfillment come from sharing and living as God calls us to. Travis concludes by encouraging listeners to embrace a lifestyle of cheerful giving, emphasizing that what we do with our resources can have a lasting impact far beyond our earthly possessions. Through this message, listeners are reminded to live lives marked by generosity and community, reflecting God's grace to others.
</itunes:summary>

Unshakeable Hope

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In this episode, Pastor Travis explores the powerful theme of hope as grounded in the Christian faith, drawn from 1 Peter 1:3-9. Travis reflects on personal experiences of hope and disappointment, such as the longstanding sports fan’s hope for a championship win, to illustrate how hope is a fundamental human need often misplaced in transient pursuits. Travis further delves into the unshakeable hope found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, emphasizing that this hope is permanent and rooted in a divine inheritance that cannot be corrupted or stolen. Through trials and life's challenges, Travis' message encourages believers to view hardships as refining their faith, described as more valuable than gold. Listeners are reminded of the ultimate joy and reward that comes with steadfast faith, urging them to hold onto hope even when the world seeks to diminish it. The episode offers reassurance that genuine faith and the hope it engenders will ultimately reveal glory and honor when Christ returns.

#JmstFUMC #Life #Bible #theology @jamestownfirstunitedmethod503
</itunes:summary>

Beware the Calm Waters: Navigating Life's Hidden Dangers

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In today's exploration, we delve into the deceptive nature of appearances and how they relate to our spiritual journey. Just as Bolton Ammy's seemingly calm waters hide deadly dangers, we're reminded of life's hidden pitfalls. This parallels Jesus' warnings about false prophets who appear as sheep but are inwardly ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15). We're encouraged to cultivate awareness of our personal weaknesses, recognizing how small compromises can snowball into significant spiritual challenges. This echoes Paul's advice to be vigilant against temptation (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). By staying engaged in good habits like scripture reading, prayer, and community, we build a strong foundation against negative influences. Let's reflect on how we can apply this wisdom to discern and navigate the unseen dangers in our own lives, growing stronger in our faith journey.

Chapter 1: Deceptive Appearances and Life's Challenges

0:00 - 1:41

Exploring how seemingly harmless situations can hide serious dangers, both in nature and in life.

Chapter 2: The Snowball Effect of Unchecked Behaviors

1:41 - 3:07

Examining how small, unchecked behaviors can escalate into bigger issues in our lives.

Chapter 3: Staying Engaged and Maintaining Healthy Habits

3:07 - 5:46

Exploring the importance of staying active and engaged to avoid temptation and maintain good habits.

Chapter 4: Accountability and New Beginnings

5:46 - 6:48

Discussing the role of accountability and advice for those seeking a fresh start.

#SpiritualGrowth

#Temptation

#PersonalWeaknesses

#MoralChallenges

#Vigilance

#SnowballEffect

#Scripture

#Prayer

#Faith

#Accountability

#Repentance

#GoodHabits

#PurposeDrivenLife

#SpiritualWarfare

#Idleness

#CommunitySupport

#SelfAwareness

#DailyDevotions

#SpiritualJourney

#BiblicalWisdom
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
In this episode, we delve into a powerful sermon based on 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33, exploring the profound consequences of our actions and the unrelenting grace of God. Through a personal anecdote from the pastor's own high school years, we see how mistakes and decisions, big or small, shape our lives and teach us invaluable lessons. The sermon draws parallels between the pastor's experience and the heavy consequences faced by King David and his family, particularly focusing on the tumultuous relationship with his son Absalom.

The pastor reflects on the pivotal moments in David's reign, marked by personal failings and divine judgment, and emphasizes that while God's grace is infinite, the principle of reaping what we sow remains true.
Lessons from Ascension

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
In this powerful message, we explore the journey of faith through the lens of King David's ascension to the throne at age 30. The story invites us to reflect on our own lives at that pivotal age and compare them to David's readiness for leadership. We're challenged to consider how God's timing often differs from our own expectations. The speaker's personal struggles at 30 highlight the common human experience of feeling unprepared for life's responsibilities. Yet, we're reminded that God's plan unfolds over time, much like David's 15-year journey from anointing to kingship. This message encourages us to cultivate patience and unwavering faith, even in the face of trials, as we trust in God's perfect timing for our lives.

Chapter 1: The Contrast of Life at 30

0:00 - 1:42

Comparison between David's life at 30 and personal experiences, highlighting the importance of readiness for life's challenges.

Chapter 2: David's Anointing and Qualifications

1:42 - 4:22

Examination of David's anointing as king and the qualifications that led to his selection.

Chapter 3: God's Timing and David's Development

4:22 - 9:03

Discussion on why God chose to make David king at 30 and the importance of patience in faith.

Chapter 4: Learning from David and Jesus

9:03 - 13:01

Reflection on David's fall and Jesus' example of patience, encouraging faith during difficult times.

Chapter 5: Cultivating Patience and Faith

13:01 - 16:06

Practical advice on developing patience and faith in God's plan, with a call to trust in His timing.

#Faith

#Patience

#GodsTiming

#DavidAndGoliath

#KingDavid

#Anointing

#JesusChrist

#SpiritualGrowth

#TrustInGod

#LifeChallenges

#DivinePlan

#Perseverance

#BiblicalWisdom

#SpiritualJourney

#GodsPurpose

#ChristianLiving

#FaithfulWaiting

#CharacterDevelopment

#DivineTiming

#SpiritualMaturity
</itunes:summary>

This message encourages us to cultivate patience and unwavering faith, even in the face of trials, as we trust in God's perfect timing for our lives.

Chapter 1: The Contrast of Life at 30

0:00 - 1:42

Comparison between David's life at 30 and personal experiences, highlighting the importance of readiness for life's challenges.

Chapter 2: David's Anointing and Qualifications

1:42 - 4:22

Examination of David's anointing as king and the qualifications that led to his selection.

Chapter 3: God's Timing and David's Development

4:22 - 9:03

Discussion on why God chose to make David king at 30 and the importance of patience in faith.

Chapter 4: Learning from David and Jesus

9:03 - 13:01

Reflection on David's fall and Jesus' example of patience, encouraging faith during difficult times.

Chapter 5: Cultivating Patience and Faith

13:01 - 16:06

Practical advice on developing patience and faith in God's plan, with a call to trust in His timing.

#Faith

#Patience

#GodsTiming

#DavidAndGoliath

#KingDavid

#Anointing

#JesusChrist

#SpiritualGrowth

#TrustInGod

#LifeChallenges

#DivinePlan

#Perseverance

#BiblicalWisdom

#SpiritualJourney

#GodsPurpose

#ChristianLiving

#FaithfulWaiting

#CharacterDevelopment

#DivineTiming

#SpiritualMaturity

 <itunes:summary>
Title:

The Transformative Power of Saying 'Yes': From Pro Wrestling to the Pulpit

Key Points:

- A simple "yes" can significantly alter the trajectory of one's life, leading to unexpected and transformative paths.

- The speaker's personal story transitioned from an aspiring pro wrestler to becoming a pastor, initiated by agreeing to play Samson in a Vacation Bible School.

- The sermon examines the cultural and biblical significance of saying "yes," including references to Palm Sunday and Jesus' request for a donkey, which fulfilled Old Testament prophecies.

- It probes the theological concept of "the Lord needs," pondering the implications of God's requests despite God lacking nothing.

- The sermon encourages listeners to be receptive to God's call and to consider what they might release for His use, underscoring the power of positive responses to divine guidance.

Stories:

- The speaker recounts their own series of affirmative responses, beginning with playing Samson and leading to a pastoral vocation.

- A biblical narrative about the disciples saying "yes" to Jesus' request for a donkey, illustrating obedience to divine requests and the fulfillment of prophecy.

Scripture References:

- Palm Sunday's account in the Gospels, where Jesus asks for a donkey, signifying the peaceful arrival of a king and fulfilling the prophecy from Zechariah.

- Psalm 50, which asserts God's ownership over all creation, raising the question of what it means for the Lord to "need" something.

Summary of Sermon:

The sermon delves into the transformative power of affirmative responses, particularly in the context of faith and alignment with God's purpose. It draws connections between popular culture, personal narrative, and biblical events to illustrate the profound impact of saying "yes" to God's call. By examining the scriptural account of Palm Sunday and the paradox of a God who lacks nothing yet asks of us, the sermon invites listeners to embrace opportunities for divine service and consider the role of obedience and submission in their own lives. Through humor and personal reflection, the message inspires a contemplative and actionable response to the nudges of Jesus in everyday life.
</itunes:summary>

Perfection Every Moment

 <itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
The highest perfection which man can attain, while the soul dwells in the body, does not exclude ignorance, and error, and a thousand other infirmities. Now, from wrong judgments, wrong words and actions will often necessarily flow: And, in some cases, wrong affections also may spring from the same source. I may judge wrong of you: I may think more or less highly of you than I ought to think; and this mistake in my judgment may not only occasion something wrong in my behavior, but it may have a still deeper effect; it may occasion something wrong in my affection. From a wrong apprehension, I may love and esteem you either more or less than I ought. Nor can I be freed from a likableness to such a mistake while I remain in a corruptible body. A thousand infirmities, in consequence of this, will attend my spirit, till it returns to God who gave it. And, in numberless instances, it comes short of doing the will of God, as Adam did in paradise. Hence the best of men may say from the heart,

"Every moment, Lord, I need The merit of thy death,

for innumerable violations of the Adamic as well as the angelic law." It is well, therefore, for us, that we are not now under these, but under the law of love. "Love is" now "the fulfilling of the law," which is given to fallen man. This is now, with respect to us, "the perfect law." But even against this, through the present weakness of our understanding, we are continually liable to transgress. Therefore every man living needs the blood of atonement, or he could not stand before God.
</itunes:summary>

Empty Philosophies

 <itunes:subtitle>Colossians 2:8</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>Pastor Travis Voeltz </itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

Colossians 2:8

This passage from the Bible really speaks to me… In today’s world, many people are taken captive by "hollow and deceptive philosophy". You often hear about this with young students who attend secular universities. Many of them grow up in Christian homes, often attending church, only to give up the faith of their parents after they go off to college. From there on out, they’re getting their influences sometimes in the wrong places.
</itunes:summary>
