Temptation: the conflict between short-term urges and long-term ideals. Short term, we can pursue self-gratification, self-security, and self-exaltation - but all of those things fall short. Daniel’s prophetic visions offer hope that God will bring all nations under his rule.

Daniel’s visions are packed with apocalyptic imagery, offering hope to Israelites living in exile under Babylonian rule. Daniel remains faithful to the God of Israel, while maintaining influence in the surrounding culture of Babylon. His visions offer guidance for faithfulness and hope of a future where evil hearts and rulers will one day come under the authority of the one true God.

Daniel’s visions also introduce us to the "Son of Man," a Messiah figure who will come to restore Israel to their God and bring about a new Jerusalem. Throughout the Gospel accounts, Jesus uses this title to refer to himself, activating the prophetic hyperlinks of the Hebrew Scriptures and pointing to his identity as the long awaited Jewish Messiah.

What does it look like to be faithful in the midst of exile? The book of Daniel offers a surprising and relevant answer. This incredible work of apocalyptic literature offers a glimpse of God’s plan to restore his people and remain faithful to them no matter the circumstances.

This week, we begin a new series “You Have Heard…”, looking at 6 instances where Jesus uses the phrase: “You have heard it said…but I tell you…”Jesus frequently challenges his audience’s understanding of Scripture when he says this. Secondly, his audience often limited Old Testament commandments to external actions, not inward righteousness. Jesus reveals the true intention of the law - God does not look just on the outside of the man, but at the heart.

In Matthew 5, Jesus uses this phrase “You have heard it said” for the first time, and he begins by addressing the topic of murder. The question becomes, “Can I be considered a good person if I’m not a murderer?”

It's the end of the year - can you believe it? If you're like me, you're beginning to feel both a sense of excitement and simultaneously a sense of panic as 2020 approaches.

"Will I make the most of next year?"

Hey, take it easy for a second.

What if we've made "achieving" and "accomplishing" our chief end...to our detriment. What if the filter with which you look at goal setting needs to change, perhaps in a way that would set you up for growth every time?

God's plan for us is greater than we can see or imagine, why not learn to trust him as we do our best in making plans?

I hope this brief message encourages you. Know that I'm praying for you, and I sure am grateful to be your pastor.

What I've come to realize is that what often sticks with my kids is what they find most memorable. After a quick search on YouTube for "Proverbs 16:9 Kids," I found this simple tune created by a family band (That's right - they're out there! Gasperetti's are next...). While the kids appeared to be staring directly into my soul, the song itself got instantly stuck in my head. What I realized is that, by accident, I had memorized Proverbs 16:9! Perhaps this family band is on to something...
