106. Elder Highlight: Meet the McCarrells!

When they came here in 2005, they met God in a way that they’d never met him before, and their lives are different for it today. Jamie appreciates the creative ministries happening at Central, such as reaching the marginalized community by meeting their needs and showing them Christ. And he also loves seeing how God has led Central to explore new and innovative ways to include young people and women in ways that highlight their giftedness. His main hope for Central? 105. Elder Highlight: Meet the Nashes!

They’ve been here almost 10 years, and as soon as they walked in the door that first Wednesday night, they had some instant connections to mission work and college friends. The Nash family quickly came to love the community involvement here, and they found in Central a place to serve and for their girls to grow in their faith. Michael is known for his compassion, and he brings to this leadership a gift for listening to and connecting with people. He is excited about the present and what God is already doing through Central. And as we look to the future of this community, we look not to create new things but to align ourselves better with what God is already doing. May we have the eyes to see where God is already working and join him in that work.

As a church, we are taking an honest look at racial healing. What is our part in bringing about racial unity? How do we as Christ-followers interact with others in the world who are different from us? Leading us into the topic is Dr. Jerry Taylor of ACU. While many people approach the topic of race from a cultural, political, or social position, as Christians we don’t begin there. Dr. Taylor shares that being attuned to the voice of God and the work of Jesus and the Spirit within us will lead us into the place where we can listen to others and engage in the work of racial healing. “It is possible for us to care about each other and to have some impact on each other’s lives. 92. How Camp Blessing Blessed Our Students

“I saw God unite everyone.” “I saw God when the campers prayed.” “I saw God in the fact that no one was excluded.” “I saw God in how the campers were moved by the Gospel and by how much God loves them.” And these are just a small representation of all that our students came away with after serving at Camp Blessing. In this episode, you'll hear directly from our group who recently returned from helping facilitate a camp for students with special needs. They witnessed in person how vulnerability and selflessness can transform our interactions with one another. The lessons they learned sound a lot like Christ—how he modeled love, compassion, and serving to all people. Like the prayer at the end of this episode states, we too ask for a heart like the heart of Jesus.

91. The Scoop on All-Church VBS

We are launching something new this summer: All-Church VBS. “But isn’t VBS always all-church?” Well, we always have adults volunteering. But this year—adults are participating! No dropping off your kids to have all the fun. This is ALL of us showing up to join in! The goal is our 4-year-old kiddos signing up along with our 44-year-olds not to be outdone by our 84-year-olds. All are invited, activities are geared toward all ages, and it’s to participate, not volunteer!

It’s 4 nights of fun, beginning at 6pm each night, July 30th – August 2nd. Listen to our conversation for a sneak preview of the theme as well as what to expect for each night of All-Church VBS. 90. Serving Others Through Suffering

“A man without purpose is lost.” Today’s episode delves into the question of suffering and struggle through the stories of Koben Puckett, Mic Biesboer, and Greg Dowell. Each has personal experience with struggle, and they discuss these times of difficulty and pain. What do we learn from living through darkness? What gives us hope in the face of struggle? Koben discusses how he had a shift in perspective to find things to be thankful for in the midst of trials, and this change of heart equipped him to help others. They also discuss the difference between managing old pain versus fresh pain. Through their stories, we see how God has a beautiful way of working through our difficulties to allow us to care for others, by serving others out of our weakness.

VBS didn’t exist without volunteers, and everything was intergenerational. It was a time of community. But on a deeper level, what impact did VBS have on your faith? What takes place on a spirit level during VBS?

We know that statistically speaking, children and adolescents have a greater likelihood of sticking with their faith if they have mentors outside their family. Enter “All-Church VBS.” We’re doing things differently this year, and this is on purpose—to create space for those faith-building relationships to take place among all generations. Where do you go when you have questions—especially questions about faith? Featured on today’s episode is guest speaker Dr. A.J. Swoboda who is helping us take a look at our theological journey. What is the process of questioning our beliefs about God? Is it safe to ask questions and relearn what we’ve always held as true? Today’s conversation is just a preview of the in-depth dialogue to come on February 26. We’re calling the event Faith Forum, and it’s a safe place to have open conversation on relevant topics. We will use Dr. Swoboda's book "After Doubt" for our first Faith Forum, and we will go through 2 sessions looking at faith and doubt. In Dr. Swoboda’s own words, our goal is to learn to love the God who is and not the God we want. He encourages us not to end with this episode but to walk the journey with other people. Dr. A. J. Swoboda (PhD, Birmingham) is the associate professor of Bible, theology and World Christianity at Bushnell University. For nearly ten years, he served as a college pastor on the campus of the University of Oregon. Then, for another decade, planted and pastored an urban church in Portland, Oregon called Theophilus that continues to worship to this day. As well, he leads a Doctor of Ministry program around the Holy Spirit and Leadership at Fuller Seminary and has taught at Multnomah University, London School of Theology, LIFE Pacific, and Southeastern University. He is the author of ten books, including Redeeming How we Talk (Moody), After Doubt (Brazos), and the award-winning Subversive Sabbath (Brazos). As well, he is the co-host of the “Slow Theology” podcast with New Testament scholar Dr. Nijay Gupta that reaches thousands each week. He loves Jesus deeply, has been married to Quinn for eighteen years, and is the proud father of one son, Elliot. They live and work on an urban farm in Eugene, Oregon.

83. Grow: Spiritual Growth Within Community

“No one drifts into spiritual maturity.” Spiritual growth requires intentionality, and that happens best in the context of relationships. The goal for our church is for all of us to be on the journey of discipleship, and our leadership has narrowed it down to 3 easy concepts: Connect / Grow / Serve. We introduced “GROW in Classes and Groups” recently, and we wanted to go a little deeper on that topic for our episode today. What does spiritual growth mean to you? What does that look like within a community? Community is part of who God is—it’s a vital piece in our walk with Christ. Being in community brings accountability, growth, and strength when we need it the most. Part of growth as a Christian is becoming more like Christ, and community helps us to grow and mature in that direction. In this episode we talk about what spiritual growth means to us, why it’s important to get involved, and how community produces growth within our walk with Christ.

82. The Blessings of Generosity

The Bible doesn’t shy away from talking about how we use our money, but we’re often hesitant to have those conversations ourselves. When we remember that everything we have is God’s, perhaps it will change our approach. Consider that we are taking what is already His and seeing how He is leading us to use it. Today’s episode is a look at upcoming conversations we’ll be having as a church about generosity. The study takes a deep dive into Scripture to see what God has to say about the blessings he’s given us and how he intends for us to use those blessings. If we consider how Jesus talked about money, he brought up the topic in the context of making disciples—as a way of fostering discipleship. Why is it important that we are good stewards of what God has given us? And how does this affect us as followers of Christ? 76. Gifted for Ministry: Men & Women in the Church

In 2018 after a church-wide study and much discernment on the part of the leadership at Central, women’s leadership expanded to include participating during the worship hour. When we read the Bible as a story—a story that’s taking us somewhere—we get a better idea of what God has to say about men and women who were created in His image. Central is inviting people to purse opportunities to grow in their faith, and we are called to use our gifts given by God for the good of the church and our city—men and women, younger and older, all people together.

We’re going to have more conversation about this topic for the next 6 weeks on Sunday mornings (9:00am in Room 14 at Central). This class is an opportunity to take Scripture and work through the text as a community of people, to open the dialogue and try to come to a better understanding of what God is saying to us. But she got sick, and the story of her next two years is a difficult one. Today we hear from her parents, Levi and Shannon, about their journey through Madison’s illness and death. It was hard and not without struggle. But as a way to continue Madison’s legacy, the MTK Foundation was formed and now serves families throughout the Panhandle as they go through pediatric cancer. The Martha’s Home ministry has been around since 1987 and is one of our local mission partners. But what exactly is Martha’s Home? Why does it matter? Take a front row seat with our guests on the episode as they walk you through what the work is, how it changes lives, and where God is at work.

As you’ll hear, Martha’s Home is a shelter for homeless women. By teaching skills, providing for basic needs, and moving towards independence, Martha’s Home helps individuals break the cycle of poverty. You can see the fruits of what the Holy Spirit does in this community setting. As Tim states, “Community is the key to sustained recovery.” Once life’s basic survival questions are answered—What are we going to eat? Where are we going to sleep? Are we safe here?—the women at Martha’s Home become more secure and are able to live full lives where they can grow and thrive.

Don’t underestimate the power of presence. Actions as simple as being a safe place and a listening ear can help bring about positive life change for the individuals at Martha’s Home. Pay attention to this conversation for a variety of ways you can get involved—all gifts and talents are useful to the recovery of these women. Martha’s Home has played a vital role to Central’s ministry in this neighborhood and helped our leadership reimagine how we could be Jesus in the downtown area. Almost 25 years later, God is still at work through Martha’s Home to change lives.

On today’s episode of the podcast, Sheldon DeVries from Journey Church joins Greg Dowell here at Central for a discussion about the time following Easter. We are quite familiar with the resurrection of Jesus, and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which are rooted in resurrection, are foundational to this church. But what about the period of time after Jesus is raised from the dead? What do the Ascension and Pentecost mean for us? Today we read Scripture knowing the end of the story, but what if we assume the point of the view of the disciples who don’t know what happens next as they talk with Jesus after his resurrection?

This discussion is timely as we approach Holy Week at the end of the season of Lent.
