Often when we study scripture it is easy to fall into the temptation of wanting to quickly “skip or skim over” the chapters that are made up of lists. These lists could be a list of covenant commandments, a list of family members or as we see in our passage this week, a summarized list of conquered kings. But if we humble ourselves to the study of God’s word, we will come to realize the depth and magnitude that these lists can speak to us regarding the character of God our Father.

The question before us centers on why we should care about these narratives in Joshua. Aren’t they just bedtime stories we read to our children? 1 Corinthians 10:11 tells us why the historical books in both the Old Testament and New Testament are so important. “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction.” The narratives that we read are all lessons that we are to learn from those who went before us. As we read about the victories of God’s people, our faith is increased knowing that God will do the same for us. He will give us victory over our enemies.

While Israel lived like He had commanded, God took the Israelites' meager force, listened to Joshua and the Israelites, and worked a mighty victory with them. God likes to work with us, even though he does not need us. He holds victory in his hands, but, like a good father, he likes to act with his children. The Lord of the sun and all of creation even bends nature’s laws that he put into place at the beginning of the universe’s natural processes. He is not limited by the time set for a day, but he can, if he wishes, lengthen or shorten them. The Lord lengthened the day to punish the kings of Canaan’s evils, but he shortened the time of the sun’s shining when he punished his son in our place. Adoni-Zedek and his coalition could be defeated by spears and hail, but human sin needed a more personal touch to plunge sin’s darkness into the sea of Christ’s light.

One thing to keep in mind as we read through Joshua is that the Lord is carrying out his judgment on the people in the land. Sometimes God uses man as his sword, but he is more than capable of carrying out his offensives without us. The focus of this passage is not on the martial might of Israel calling in the heavenly artillery by summoning a deity to fight for them. The Lord himself throws hailstones down on the Amorites, and most of the fallen were from his hand, not Israel’s. Whatever the Amorites did, it must have been pretty bad for God to make fresh stones just for their stoning. His ways are higher, and his knowledge is greater than ours. We must trust His righteousness in that time, also the text itself says that “there has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.” This makes it clear that ascribing something this clear-cut of God’s “smiting” of a people is something that we can’t do in our modern context.

In Joshua 9 the Nation of Israel continues its conquest of the land of Canaan. They are fresh off victories in Jericho and Ai so the Canaanites know that they have a target on their backs. Therefore they decide to band together as one to fight Joshua and Israel. Enter the Gibeonites (the Hivites). Gibeon was a town about 6 miles northwest of Jerusalem, in modern-day El-Jib. The Gibeonites knew that the Israelites had defeated Jericho and Ai and decided to act cunningly to see if they could get Israel to make a peace treaty (covenant) with them. The Gibeonites became actors in their own play and pretended to come from a foreign land. They had all the right props…moldy bread, worn-out wineskins, patched sandals, and tattered clothing.

God often uses our setbacks and failures to teach us to rely on Him more completely. In this chapter, we see Joshua grow as a leader as he learns to walk in deeper dependence upon the LORD. We see God take the very means of their earlier defeat at Ai and turn it into a brilliant strategy for victory. God’s plan to deliver his people is back on track. Joshua’s position as a leader is strengthened, and Joshua gains a new understanding of God’s steadfast mercy and sovereign will.

As Israel approaches their next adversary, Ai (not to be confused with artificial intelligence), all indications are that this should be a cake walk. Picture a sense of pridefulness and a bit of arrogance here. The recommendation is to only send a small squad, maybe the JV team (don’t bother the whole group with such a small town.) Then, something goes horribly wrong. What happened, why did it all go south? What can we learn from this defeat? What can we learn from Joshua’s response? What can we learn from the consequences of sin? Let’s explore Joshua 7 together and course correct where we see areas in our own life that might need transformation.

This week we have a familiar story of Joshua leading the Israelites against the fortified city of Jericho. They had just miraculously crossed over the Jordan River, set themselves apart by circumcising all the men, and now Joshua experiences a conversation with God. At this point Joshua is clearly set apart for the task of leading Israel against the city of Jericho. This is an impossible task done in an improbable way. God gave Joshua instructions to take the city, however not by force, but through obedience.

It's the perfect time for the people of Israel to recommit themselves to the Lord. And what better way to do that than for all the men who had been born in the wilderness, who had never been circumcised to be circumcised. Circumcision is the outward sign for the people of Israel that they are God’s and God’s alone. For whatever reason, in the wilderness, the practice had stopped, but now is the time for this next generation to commit themselves to the Lord, outwardly and inwardly. So, all the men get the snip with new flint knives. Then the people rest, recover and celebrate the first Passover in their new land.

Years of wandering are about to end. It is hard to imagine what’s on the minds and the hearts of the people. You might remember Joshua had been to the Promised Land forty years earlier. As a spy he came back to Moses with a positive report and encouragement to go in and possess the land, only to be shouted down. The crowd won the day, with their fearful disobedience earning them exile in the desert until that generation’s death. Joshua was a young man and now he is old. He is the new leader of God’s chosen people. There would be many battles ahead. Strong leadership would be required. God would again remind Joshua that he was not alone. It was time to cross the Jordan.

Do you have something that brings up memories or starts conversations with others? Maybe a tattoo, a scar, or something hanging up in the house that stands out from what you’d normally see in someone’s house? We tend to put things out on display for ourselves but usually it catches the eyes of others and sometimes leads to discussions. For the Israelites, God had instructed twelve men, one from each tribe, to take up a stone from the riverbed of the Jordan and place it where they were to camp that night. Having witnessed a miraculous display of God’s complete control over nature, God instructed Joshua to display a monument to be seen and cause people to ask, “What do those stones mean to you?” These stones were just stones, yet, when the children and later generations would see them, they would ask what they mean. “What do these represent?”

Joshua 2 introduces us to someone, who is quite honestly, unexpected as someone God would use. Her name is Rahab. She is mentioned alongside towering figures of the faith such as Abraham, Moses, Noah, Gideon, and King David in Hebrews Chapter 11. How is this possible? Why is it so shocking and unexpected? It’s surprising because Rahab is a prostitute. And almost every time her name is mentioned in the Bible she is known as Rahab the prostitute. Not a religious giant as you would expect but a person most people would be ashamed to be associated with. But God saw things differently. God saw a heart of faith and someone who believed in Him wholeheartedly.

The book of Acts tells a story about a zealous Jew named Saul. One day he was on his way to Damascus to arrest and prosecute those “belonging to the Way,” people who claimed Jesus of Nazareth was the promised Messiah who had died for their sins and rose again from the dead. As Saul was on his way, Luke records that he was met by the risen Lord Jesus and was miraculously converted from an opposer of Jesus to a believer in Jesus. But the story does not end there…

Saul, who would eventually be better known as Paul, was not only converted to Christ but was also commissioned by Christ. Soon after he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, the Lord appeared to a man named Ananias and told him that Saul would be a “chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles.” This is what we see happening throughout the rest of the book of Acts: Paul and his ministry companions traveling all around the known-world proclaiming the good news of Jesus and calling all people to believe in Him and be saved. Many Gentiles responded to the gospel, and churches were planted from Antioch to Rome and everywhere in between.

One of those places, where people responded to the gospel and began to be the church in their region, was Colossae. Colossae was a city in the region of Phrygia. In Acts, we learn that devout Jews from this region were in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples and Peter preached the gospel to a diverse crowd of listeners. We are told that each person heard the message in their native tongue and thousands responded

to the gospel with repentance and baptism. We are also told that Paul visited and ministered in the region of Phrygia during his missionary journeys, but it seems unlikely that Paul ever visited Colossae in person.

So, how did the gospel get to Colossae? It could be that some believed in Jesus as the gospel was shared with them by those who heard it in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost. There were also those who heard the gospel from one of their own, Paul’s fellow minister, Epaphras, who likely heard it from Paul himself and then took it back to Colossae and preached it to his community.

The book of Psalms is one of the most beautiful pieces of poetry ever written. It engages us. It draws us in with its imagery, its raw emotion, and its mix of both problem and praise. The psalms feel like real life, and they model for us what it looks like to encounter God and experience His blessing and rule in our real lives at all times.

As we study the book, we will look at various types of psalms which will together give us a feel for the overall landscape of the book’s message and how it communicates that message. What we will see is that the psalms are not merely beautiful, but they are instructive for us, teaching us how we can communicate with God. In our study, we will find various different types of psalms, each of which offers a different example of what it might look like for us to meditate on God’s word and talk with Him about how our lives relate to His word.

Sports team scouts spend countless dollars trying to find the next up and coming star that can put their team on the map. Recruiters comb through resumes and stake out job fairs to find the talent they hope will take their company to the next level. Many in their respective fields are on an endless quest to find the total package, someone they feel can make a real difference.

As we open the book of Hebrews, we find a true “game-changer” in the person of Jesus and discover just how glorious He truly is. He is the exact imprint of God, the agent of creation, the sacrifice for our sins, and the King who rules the cosmos. His name is above all other names and all of creation is subject to Him in worship and service. There is no one greater and none come close to His supremacy.

If you've ever found yourself floating in the middle of a body of water, you know just how quickly and easy it is to be carried away by the wind and tide. Without being properly anchored, we can easily drift from where we need to be. Throughout the book of Hebrews, we find stern warnings against spiritual drift. The first warning found in this week’s passage addresses the influence and impact that other sources can have on our lives; do the voices we listen to and the worldviews we adhere to come from the irrefutable source of Scripture? We are reminded here that the Gospel message comes from the most reliable source of all—the Lord himself. Not only does this good news come from Him but it originated in Him and continues to be sustained by Him to this day. Comfort and confidence are available to us through the storms of life when we place our anchor and hope in Jesus.

Able to Sympathize (HP)

Every year for Christmas we gather to celebrate the birth of our Savior. One of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith is the fact that God became man; when we look at Jesus we find someone who is 100% God and 100% man. This concept is referred to as the “hypostatic union.” The unity of the God-Man is one topic that has been highly debated, studied, and examined since the formation of the early church.

We can often find ourselves in error when we over emphasize either His deity—status as God—or overemphasize His humanity—status as man. While it is appropriate to take time and energy to understand all this entails, the author of Hebrews appeals to this truth as a source of comfort and encouragement to a group of believers who needed it. For we have a Savior who has experienced all that it is to be human—everything we experience. As a result, Jesus is able to serve as a perfect high priest, deeply attuned to the need of His adopted brothers and sisters.

Rest for His People (HP)

The author of Hebrews captivates its readers as it draws from the history and stories of the Old Testament, illustrating their foreshadowing of Jesus. We see this greater overarching narrative culminating in the person of Jesus, greater than all that preceded Him. In this week’s passage, we are drawn to a connection between Moses, God’s chosen leader for His people of old, and Jesus, the ultimate and final leader to which God’s people look. While Moses led the Israelites in a physical exodus out of Egypt, Jesus leads us to a spiritual exodus out of death into life. Moses was tasked with leading the Israelites into the Promise Land, but Jesus came to bring us into a place of rest for our souls. As the Israelites wrestled with the temptation to distrust the heart of God, we face the same temptation to harden our hearts, and much like the Israelites, often reject His commands, rationalizing our disobedience. The writer of Hebrews pleads with us to enter God's rest, but will we listen to his words?

It’s not uncommon at various points in life to hear someone describe a feeling of detachment and disconnection. It can feel as if there is a large distance, a great gulf in which we are shouting across in hopes to be heard, seen, or even acknowledged. This feeling can present itself within our earthy relationships, but more often these emotions are used to describe our connection, or lack thereof, with God. What’s miraculous about the Gospel is that we are invited and called to freely run to God in the midst of it all. What waits for us is not a cranky or uninterested being, but a God who eagerly seeks to greet us with grace and mercy. Whatever state we may find ourselves in, whatever temptations, trials, or difficulties bog us down, we have a great High Priest who is able to sympathize with us in our time of need and give us what we need most.

Invitation to Depth (HP)

Progress or growth in any area of life can be difficult to achieve. It doesn’t happen by chance but takes intentional devotion. In the same way, our pursuit of spiritual maturity requires an intentional decision, to seek the transformation that comes from the desire to be more like Jesus. For it is in our maturation that we see and experience more of God’s goodness, love, and wisdom and are empowered to embody His love for others. Throughout the early chapters of Hebrews, we are met with a glorious revelation of the person of Jesus: who He is and what He has done for us. As we consider the original readers, we might expect to see such transformation taking place in their lives when faced with these truths, yet that is not what we find in this week’s passage. In fact, quite the opposite! We find the author of Hebrews pleading with and confronting his readers in light of their reluctance to pursue maturity. The text soberly warns its readers that staying in spiritual infancy is problematic in its own right, but also cautions that this lack of development could potentially lead to a point of leaving the faith all together. This brings the question to us: are we lazy in our faith or are we pursuing all that God has for us?

To the Very End (HP)

Trust is necessary in nearly all areas of our lives. You and I exhibit trust in someone—or something—every single day. From relying on map apps in our phones for directions, to the recipe we follow to cook dinner, we place a certain level of trust in a person or object to deliver an expected outcome. For a relationship to thrive, trust must be given. However, trust is hard to define, easy to lose, and not easily earned. It requires long-term faithfulness, reliability, and steadfastness to ensure trust is kept and maintained. In this section of Hebrews, the author appeals to the trustworthiness of God to inspire perseverance. God’s trustworthy character alone should elicit our trust, but when we doubt, we can look to the stories of His faithfulness—the countless times in His Word we find Him delivering His people. The promises of God’s Word offer a stable foundation for our lives.

Priest of Obscurity (HP)

Throughout Hebrews the author makes the argument that Jesus is superior to all who preceded Him—from the angels, to Moses, Aaron, The Law, Joshua, and the entire priesthood. This emphasis was due in part to a rise of Christian believers—formerly Jewish in faith—wrestling with the temptation to return to old patterns and traditions. The author attempts to reveal to readers Jesus’ superiority in every aspect to the old covenant; that it would be foolish to turn back, for the former things were there in anticipation of a greater thing to come. The author continues his demonstration by drawing the reader’s attention to Melchizedek, a priest mentioned in the Old Testament. To many, Melchizedek, whose name means “king of righteousness,” is a mysterious biblical figure. Despite what little is captured in writing, this priest-king serves as a poignant foreshadow, pointing us to an integral part of Jesus’ eternal priestly ministry.

The New Has Come (HP)

A covenant, not a term frequenting conversation today, is a legally binding agreement between individuals. Despite its infrequent use, understanding the definition, what covenants are and are not is vital to grasping the over-arching story of the Bible. Unlike covenants made between humans, when God enters into a covenantal relationship with humans, it is one-sided. Only God can initiate and establish a covenant with Himself. All throughout the Old Testament, we find God choosing people—Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, etc.—for covenantal relationship, each established with the promise of blessing for the faithful, and curses for those who failed. Time and time again we see humans fail to keep their side of the covenant, experiencing hardships and consequences for their choices. Yet God is merciful and to the reader, it is clear that the covenants offered by God throughout history still far outweigh the alternative, an existence apart from God. And yet God had more for us. This week’s passage in Hebrews illustrates a better covenant between God and humanity, one that is mediated and fulfilled perfectly by Jesus on our behalf.

Nothing But the Blood (HP)

At times, The Bible may use language or imagery that cause discomfort for the squeamish or faint of heart. Even those less sensitive might find the sacrifices and blood of the Old Covenant to be uncomfortable—or perhaps simply irrelevant—and therefore warranting exclusion from the text. Whether it causes discomfort, confusion, or is simply deemed archaic, it can be easy to avoid a deeper engagement with these passages of Scripture. In the Old Testament, blood was recognized as a symbol of life and death and served as a sacred substance in various sacrificial rituals for purification (cleansing), consecration (setting aside), and atonement (reconciliation).

In this week’s passage, the writer of Hebrews seeks to clarify that, beyond symbolism, there is no comparison between the blood of Jesus and the blood of sacrificial animals. Only Jesus' blood can remove sin and guilt. Only His blood can cleanse our conscience and empower us to serve God. The sacrificial system for God's people in the Old Testament, including its location, all served to point us to the coming better way for man to be purified, consecrated, and atoned for: through the blood of Jesus.

It Is Finished! (HP)

Truly believing that God has forgiven all our sins can be one of the biggest struggles we face as believers. Deep down inside each of us fear, doubt, and uncertainty plague us, challenging our confidence that God has truly forgiven all our faults and failures. It is so easy to find ourselves picturing God as sitting in wait, just looking for the opportunity to pounce on our long list of wrongs and unfulfilled rights. Yet this could not be further from the truth! As we delve into this week’s passage of Hebrews, we are reminded of the final words of Jesus on the cross: It is finished.” Our salvation is secure, and our relationship with God restored! We have been gently guided back to the good graces of God. And there is nothing that you or I can do to negate that. How can we be so sure? We're told upon the completion of His work, Jesus sat down; there is no more work to be done. We’re reminded that God will remember our sins no more. Do you believe this? Or does it feel just too good to be true?

Hold Fast (HP)

A good pastor or spiritual leader will always express care and concern for the wellbeing of their people. Sometimes this care will come across in a word of encouragement or exhortation. Other times it may appear in a word of warning. For the spiritual leader, nothing is more exciting than seeing someone step fully into what God has for them, and nothing can be more heart breaking than watching someone stray. In this section of Hebrews, the author provides all of the above. The writer desires for us to have great confidence in our salvation and ability to connect with God. We are encouraged to use that access to remain faithful, avoid rebellion, and to not take advantage of what great privilege that rests in our possession. While the world around us may guide us towards immediacy and things that are temporal, followers of Jesus will continually look forward to the day of His return, all the while living as if each day may be the last.

Hall of Faith (HP)

As humans, we are captivated by a good story—even more so when it's a true one. At any given time in the year, at the top of the New York Times best-sellers list, there will be an autobiography of an important person telling their story. The Hollywood Box office will be dominated by a biopic documenting someone's triumph over tragedy and how it made them who they are today. These stories can give us a sense of hope, a source of motivation, and an example to follow. We've reached the point in Hebrews that many are familiar with, referred to as the Hall of Faith. Within this section, the author walks through example upon example of individuals from the Old Testament who exhibited a life of faith despite the obstacles they faced. By reminding us of these individuals, we are encouraged to hold tightly to Jesus. When we do so, we too will be able to persevere through whatever lies ahead. May this reminder of God's faithfulness encourage us to confidently hold on to God, just like the saints before us.

Unshakeable (HP)

There are certain environments in our everyday lives that come with reasonable expectations of what might happen. When we go to school, we expect to learn. When we go to the grocery store, there is an expectation that we will leave with food or whatever household items we might need. When we go to the gas station, we expect to leave with enough fuel to take us to the next destination. However, there is one place that we may frequent that can inspire varying expectations as to what might happen, or we might leave with: the church. Whatever objectives we bring with us will impact our experience on a Sunday and in a group setting. Our personal purposes and expectations when we enter this space act as a filter for our affections, feelings, and even our own contributions to the atmosphere. What do you expect when you come to church? The writer of Hebrews brings this to our attention by contrasting two places in which God's presence has been found. When God spoke to His people at Mount Sinai, the people trembled and begged him to be silent. When God speaks to us now, through His Word, we can find grace and long to hear more.

Transformed Priorities (HP)

When it comes to understanding what God wants for our lives, the problem usually isn't that God wasn't clear enough. The problem often lies in our willingness to listen and obey. Thus far in the book of Hebrews, our minds have been stretched to better understand God’s will, make more biblical connections, and establish a proper view of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. As the book nears its conclusion, we find that the author lists some extremely practical exhortations for our daily lives and community. The premise is this: if all that has been discussed before is true, it demands certain changes in our lives. The most powerful love we can ever experience is the love of God which is freely given to us by Jesus and has eternal implications. Therefore, this love should impact the way we love those who God has placed around us. The question is, are we functioning as a conduit of His great love, or simply serving ourselves in a closed circuit?

O Holy Night is often cited by many as their absolute favorite Christmas song. Our favorite musicians have recorded renditions of it. The imagery in the song chokes us up as we sing it. The theology the song teaches is robust and communicates the Gospel beautifully. Our advent series A Thrill of Hope, has sought to show us just how this song isn’t just something to enjoy musically once a year, but how these truths are impactful for the entirety of our lives. This is your hope – Jesus Christ, the light of the world, has come to save and to restore. To bring peace on earth. To be with us, and to heal us from suffering.

For all who wait, for all who hunger, for all who've prayed, and for all who wonder – The King, the Messiah, Emmanuel has come.

RESPOND: Where do you need peace in your life? Not just a good feeling about something but a peace that surpasses all understanding? God cares for you and desires you to rest in the safety of His promises.

Spend time today identifying where in your life you need His peace, then reach out to a friend or a Life Group member and ask them to pray with you. Ask God to grant each of you His peace wherever you need it most this Christmas season.

December 19: Podcast. Mary's Bravery

REFLECT: As Christians, we are not promised an easy go at life. In fact, we are warned by Jesus in Matthew 10:22, “You will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Mary gives us a perfect example of this: she is young, terrified, doesn’t fully understand, but answers the angel with an unabashed “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Her entire reputation is at stake, as well as Joseph’s, yet they faithfully trust in God’s will. How much in your life are you driven by what other people think of you? Are you willing to push through the fear of rejection for the sake of Jesus’ name?

RESPOND: For some of you, this will be a big and scary ask: Tell at least one person about Jesus this week! Step outside of your comfort zone and preach the gospel! Even if it’s scary, even if you’re not sure what people will think. Step out and live your calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the lost around you--God wants to use you more than you know.

“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

December 18: Jesus is Reason for the Season

REFLECT: "Shopping for the last gift.
Figuring out what you’re going to wear to your fourth Christmas party.
Assembling the grocery list for Christmas Eve.
Making sure you didn’t leave anyone off your Christmas card list.
And so on…

Our time is held captive by the myriad of tasks we must do during the Christmas season. And if we’re not careful, this list can strip us of remembering the true “reason for the season.” We celebrate Christmas to remember Jesus taking on flesh and stepping into this world. When we open the pages to the beginning of Luke, we read in awe of the unfolding events that brought us the baby Jesus laying in a manger.

Over 2000 years have passed since the moment Jesus breathed His first breath. During this time, Christmas has become more about expectations other people placed on us and less about the expectations our Heavenly Father has for us. To do this, we must give Jesus our hearts and not just our minds. We must declare with words, actions, and priorities that Jesus truly is the reason for the season."

RESPOND: As our mouth declares that “Jesus is the reason for the season", our priorities communicate that friends, gifts, family, and busyness is the real reason for the season. We have one week left before Christmas day. What shift will you make to declare with your heart that “Jesus is the reason for the season?”

REFLECT: Last week we saw God’s plan unfolding through the promise of John the Baptist--the man sent to prepare the way for Jesus the Rescuer. This week we will focus on Jesus' birth! His birth is important because of what He came to do. God sent Him to earth as a human baby, to bring Him into our world, to save us from our sins.

December 16: Mary & Joseph, Part 1

REFLECT: The past couple of years have been marked by unexpected difficulties, foiled plans, and losses to grieve. And yet, God promises that He is with us, even in the midst of confusion and uncertainty.

Just as God was with Mary in a season of unexpected hardships, we can look to God and His eternal promises for comfort and security. May we be like Mary when unexpected circumstances come our way; resolved to likewise say "I am the Lord's servant…may things be for me as you have decided them to be." This simple act of submission opens us up to engage the presence of a gracious God and experience His favor and presence.

RESPOND: What places in your life do you need to submit to God's perfect authority; your future, your finances, your relationships, your current circumstances? God has a plan for you. Take time today to sit with God; ask Him to reveal what strongholds might be holding you back from receiving all that He has for you, and surrender them to Him in a confession of faith today.

December 14: Behold the Lamb of God

REFLECT: This week has all been about Elizabeth and Zachariah. Their son, John the Baptist, became the one who was the “voice in the wilderness” and the one who “prepared the way of the Lord.” His mission on earth was not to be the Christ, but to declare to the world what he already knew before he was even born--that Jesus was the Christ and the Son of the Living God. He lived a life that pointed others to Jesus as their long-awaited Savior.

Are you living a life this Christmas season that points others to Jesus? Do you find yourself caught up in the commercializion and busyness of Christmas or have you been able to engage the real reason for the season? Turn your eyes upon Jesus and declare His coming to the world.

December 12: Podcast, Comfortable with Surprises

REFLECT: Romans 8:28 tells us “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Today, we see Elizabeth and Zechariah, righteous before God, having their greatest prayer answered and God working miraculously for their good. Not only is this miracle for their own personal good, but also for the good of the world! John comes on the scene as a blessed surprise, an unusual man born to unlikely parents. Ask yourself: “Am I comfortable with surprises? Am I open to God using the unlikely in my life for good, to fulfill His purposes?”

RESPOND: Elizabeth & Zechariah received a great gift and surprise with the pregnancy of John the Baptist! How can you be a blessing in suprise to someone in your life this week? Bake a dozen cookies (or purchase from the store) for a neighbor or coworker and invite them to join you at church on Christmas Eve!

REFLECT: In this week’s passage, Gabriel’s describes how John would prepare the people of Israel: “He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God...turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

Is your heart prepared to receive what God has for you this Christmas season? What might be keeping you from hearing from Him or being receptive to His refining hand? Sometimes it’s as simple as too many distractions, as complicated as past hurts driving us to hold tightly to a sense of control, or as straightforward as unrepented sin.

This Christmas, how do you need to prepare to celebrate King Jesus? What does it look like for you turn your heart to God?

RESPOND: As we anticipate celebrating Jesus, we don’t have to wait to engage Him; He doesn’t require us to submit a request for an audience with Him but rather invites us to talk with Him anytime and anywhere—even in the midst of our mess.

Today, spend some time preparing your heart to celebrate Jesus at Christmas. Ask Him to reveal what distractions you might need to eliminate, the uncovering of sin requiring confession, and the softening of your heart to trust Him in all areas of your life.

Invite the Spirit to prepare your heart for the King’s arrival and celebrate with joy.

December 10: The Birth of John The Baptist

REFLECT: The word Advent means “coming.” During Advent, we remember Jesus' first coming and prepare our hearts for Him to return someday. Throughout the Bible, we see the unfolding of God’s big picture plan to bring a Rescuer--Jesus--and in today's passage we learn about the birth of John the Baptist, sent to prepare the way for Jesus, the Rescuer.

RESPOND: Draw a picture of your favorite part of this story. Hang it up where you can see it, so that when you look at it, you will be reminded to prepare your heart for Jesus. December 9: Elizabeth and Zacheriah

REFLECT: As we approach the Christmas season, let us celebrate like Elizabeth--finding joy in our lives for how God works in the unexpected and celebrating His faithfulness. Even more more importantly, let us find our joy in the knowledge that our Messiah has come! Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, is with us and He is forever faithful; always at work in our lives. His plans will always come to pass in His perfect timing. Through His choice to come, He did for us what we could not do for ourselves, saving us from our sins and reconciling us to God. Our Savior is born!

RESPOND: Got Zechariah syndrome? Spend some time reading throught Luke 1:5-25 again today. Search your thoughts and ask God to reveal to you any areas where you--like Zachariah--are not believing God's promises for your life. Confess those thoughts to Him and to a loved one; invite them to pray for you in this area, and ask God to clear out obstacles in your heart preventing you from receiving all that He has for you in this season.

December 6: Joy to The World

Joy to the world! The Lord is come.

The joy of Jesus’s birth echoes throughout all of creation "fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy”. This is good news!

Jesus brought joy to the world through His salvation; through Jesus we can be released from bondage to sin and live lives of purpose in freedom. This is what we celebrate at Christmas–our King has come to bring us everlasting joy!

Join in with Heaven and nature and sing praise to God.

Ask a friend or family member what brings them Joy. Use that information to make their day! Buy them a cup of coffee, make time to catch up, take care of a task they dread doing, or give them a word of encouragement. Let the joy that comes from knowing Jesus spill out into the lives of those around you!

December 5: Audio Devotion

God has a long history of redeeming the irredeemable, exalting the unremarkable, and restoring the broken. As we take a look at the ancestry of Jesus, we discover it is no exception. God brings forth the world’s great hope and salvation from a succession of all different types of people with all different stories. Some were mighty, some were ordinary, some were scandalous. Jesus’ origin story displays a tapestry of messy people being used in mighty ways for God’s purposes. Do you trust God to redeem your most shameful parts and accomplish something beautiful?

What does your story say about God’s character? Meditate on the ways that God has redeemed your life. Write out a list of the things that are true about God in light of the ways He has shown up in your life. Set aside a moment to give thanks and praise to God for the salvation He offers through His Son, Jesus Christ.

December 4: The Magnificat

Imagine being a teenage girl pledged to be married to a man you barely know.

Following the customs of their culture, Joseph has paid a “bride price” to your family, and you are expected to spend the next year preparing for marriage. Then suddenly, amidst your preparations, you are visited by the angel Gabriel, who informs you that you have been chosen to conceive and give birth to God’s Son.

Everything seemed to be out of Mary’s control in the Christmas story. In the middle of her betrothal, she becomes pregnant with God’s Son, leaving her fate in Joseph’s hands as he could demand retribution for a child that is not his own. Yet in the midst of it all, Mary testifies: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

In a time of uncertainty, Mary chose to worship God, looking towards the hope she had in Him. Her praise focused on the mighty works God had done and His past faithfulness; Mary’s fear, replaced with hope.

Take a moment to write out Mary's prayer of praise and post it on a mirror or in your car--somewhere you will see it often. When things seem out of your control this Christmas season, come back to her prayer, pause and give thanks to God, and write out your own prayers of praise to the God who is still working to fulfill His promises today.

December 3: Family Devotion

Sin separates us from God, and there is nothing we can do to fix that on our own. God is the only one able to bridge the gap between us and Himself. He could have left us as sinners, forever apart from Him, but He didn’t! God loves us so much that He chose to come to us through Jesus. Jesus' death and resurrection took care of our sin and allows us to come close to God when we choose to believe in and follow Him.

Make a list of your family & friends. Do any of them not yet know Jesus? Pray for them, that they would be saved. Want to know more about Jesus and Christmas?

December 2: Jesus' Lineage

Paul writes in Ephesians, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.” (Ephesians 2:19-20)

As we reflect on the genealogy of Jesus, remember that we have been adopted into the family of God. We are His sons or daughters--members of His household. Those who belong to Jesus have this blessed assurance: that our names are eternally secure in the Lamb’s book of life. Nothing can take away God’s love for us, nor remove us from His family album.
