The problem with a living sacrifice is that it keeps trying to crawl off of the altar.

Whether we realize it or not, we spend a lot of time focused on “Me”. But to fully experience the life God has for us, we must be willing to reject our own comfort for the good of others. It’s not easy, and it sure isn’t comfortable. But when you deny yourself, God can do so much more. Using a blueprint found in Romans 12, we’ll discover that when there’s more of God in you, you Self, Less.

Questions For the Road:

1. What are you holding onto, or trying to control, that feels like a burden? What might happen if you were to ‘Cast’ those to God?

2. What does a practical next step in ‘humbling yourself under the mighty hand of God’ look like in these same things?

3. Don’t go it alone! Who can you reach out to for support in taking these next steps?

Jesus has zero tolerance for hypocrisy. Jesus has unlimited grace for a sinner seeking forgiveness.

In Jesus’ time on Earth, He wasn’t interested in token gestures. He didn’t care about outward behavior. He challenged the “religion” of the day. He smashed preconceptions. He called out haters and critics. He shook up anyone whose faith was lukewarm, and He brought hope to the broken, the lost, and those tangled in sin by showing them what true worship could be.

In this series, we’ll go beyond the simple slogans of what it means to follow Christ, and open ourselves up to discover the knots in our lives that Jesus wants to undo, so that we can live an authentic faith.

Trials test faith in order to make spiritual pilgrimages complete. They are part of the “good gifts” God gives his people in order to make them whole.

A summer series through the book of James, a letter that serves as a how-to manual for the Christian life. When we deal with trials, contentions, and lack of faith, James teaches us that we can still have joy in the midst of our circumstances. The foundation of the book is the importance of faith; faith or the lack thereof can determine the direction of one’s life.

We allow certain habits to help us deal with life, but sometimes these bad habits can become part of our identity. It’s time to separate ourselves from these 'necessary' habits and recognize them for what they really are: sins. And these sins are a bigger deal than we give them credit for.

“Lead Us” Assumes We’re Following

Mark 1:12-13 “At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’ At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan.”

The Greek word for “temptation” is peirasmos. It actually refers to a “trial,” an “affliction” or to a “proving/test.” It becomes a temptation when the trial involves the potential of sinning, but the word does not refer to an attempt to intentionally make someone sin!

James 1:13 “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone…”

Exodus 17:7 “And he called the name of the place Massah (peirasmos) and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested (peirazein) the LORD by saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

The Greek word for “deliver” means to “rescue,” “save,” “guard,” “snatch,” or “free” in general.
