Is it worth it to worship when I’m hurting?

Worship reminds us that our story is bigger than our suffering and that God is still worthy, still near, and still working.

Are there still blessings when I feel overwhelmed?

In difficult seasons, it’s easy to assume blessing has left the room. Yet sometimes the most meaningful gifts of God show up quietly – strength for today, peace in the storm, people who carry us when we’re weak. Blessing is not always loud or visible, but it is real. Even in hardship, God is still providing what we need most.

In Luke 24:13–35, Jesus walks with two discouraged disciples and shows them that all of Scripture—beginning with Genesis—was always pointing to Him. He is the true and better Adam who overcomes sin, the true ark who carries us safely through judgment, the true tower who brings heaven down by grace instead of human striving, the true and better Abraham who fulfills God’s promise to bless all nations, the true Isaac who is both the promised son and the sacrifice God provides, the true Jacob who bridges heaven and earth, and the true Joseph who turns what was meant for evil into salvation for many. On the road to Emmaus, Jesus reveals that every story, every promise, and every thread of redemption finds its fulfillment in Him—the One who suffered, died, and rose again so that we might have life.

The promise that God gave to Abraham was extended to Isaac. Isaac received the favor and blessing of God, not because Isaac deserved it, but because God is gracious and God is a promise keeper. All of Isaac’s life points us to the amazing grace and love of God. Throughout Isaac’s life, God provides in ways that bless Isaac but also point us to God’s grace. Often Isaac doesn’t even seem to be the main character in his own story—he is a recipient of the good and loving work of God in a bigger story. One of the most powerful moments of lsaac’s life centers on God’s instructions to Abraham to give Isaac as a sacrifice. This unnerving story shows that God has a plan to do what we cannot do—there is no sacrifice that we could ever make to deal with the problems of sin and death, but God provides an offering that is greater. By faith we trust God to carry us through the difficult moments to something better. Throughout Isaac’s life, even beyond this scary event, God is present and providing. God provided a wife, He provided land and water, He provided children, and He would eventually use Isaac to extend the promise of blessing to a new generation that would carry on God’s promised blessing to others. In our own lives God continues to be present and providing. If look for God’s good and loving activity, we will realize that God’s grace is always moving us to His promises.

Even before God laid the foundations of the world, God planned to bring salvation and life through His Son. It was God’s good plan to bring a people together, to give them a law that would reveal both God’s good character and humanity’s great need for grace, to reveal Himself through great and miraculous events, and to bring through this people a savior. In the story of Abraham, we see the giving of a promise and the beginnings of this people group. Abraham received a call and a promise—a call to move out in faith and a promise that God would be faithful to give many descendants and land to be their home. But this promise was more than a people and a land—it was a promise that God would move history forward toward His ultimate plan. He would be present in mighty ways with this people, but this would only be a foreshadowing of His perfect presence on earth through the work of His Son, our savior, Jesus Christ. God calls Abraham to trust Him and move in faith so that this nation of people, the Israelites, would be born. And through this nation of people, God would reach all the nations. A savior would come through Israel so that all who call on the name of the Lord could be saved. God would bless Abraham so that he could be a blessing. He would bless Israel so that Israel could be a blessing. And today, God still brings blessing, not only upon Israel, but also upon His church. You and I are part of God’s family by faith. God is present and working. God brings blessing, but not to stay with us. He brings blessings so that they may flow through us. We too are blessed to be a blessing to the world.

Main Idea— Following the great flood, God once again instructs humanity to multiply and fill the earth. But once again we find people disobeying God. A large group of people gather in Babel with the intentions of building a great tower that will reach to the heavens. Their intentions are not to find their way to God but, rather, to bring God down to them. They intend to gain access to God so that they may manipulate the divine for their own purposes—to gain power and fame. God knows that this is a destructive behavior. Humanity is created to know God, to trust God, and to worship God. But we are not created to have the power of God. With sin’s mark on us and the world, that power would be devastating and destructive. So in God’s grace, God divides the people with different languages to spread them out across the earth. There is a great lie at work. The lie is that power and fame bring fulfillment, purpose, and life. The evil spiritual forces in opposition to God use this lie and make false promises to draw us in. Through empty promises and ego, we are often drawn away from the goodness of God. It is in grace that God divided the people so that they may discover their true need for Him and for salvation. And at the right time God would indeed come down to bring that salvation for His creation.

God created everything good. In the Garden Adam and Eve had perfect connection to God. Two trees stood in the garden—the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Life was offered to them, but the God told them to refrain from the other tree. They were never meant to have that knowledge—they were meant to rely on God. At some unknown point, a created being rebelled against God and entered the garden in the form of a servant to pull Adam and Eve away from the perfect connection that they shared with God and one another. Eve was deceived by the serpent and Adam willfully chose to disobey. They believed that there was something better than God’s offer, and their rejection of God in this moment continues to ripple throughout all generations.

In the third year of His ministry, Jesus came across a man that had been blind from birth. Jesus is moved with compassion for the man and He is stirred to display the glory of His Father in Heaven. So, he rubs mud on the man’s eyes and sends him to the pool of Siloam. The man returned seeing and praising God. When the religious leaders asked the man what happened, all he could say is ”I was blind and now I see. And the difference was Jesus.” While this frustrated the religious leaders, it no doubt moved others to believe. Noone had ever healed a person born blind. In fact, this was more of a creation story than a healing story. Because he was born without sight, Jesus had to create parts of this man’s brain that had never developed. Noone else could do it, and that is the point. Jesus can create and do things in us that no one else can do. When we let Him bring that new life in us, we get to tell others about it. And our stories have the power to point people to Jesus so that they, too, can experience that new life. We only need the courage to share.

Action Step— Write out your faith story. It should include life before Jesus, meeting Jesus, and life after meeting Jesus. Make a plan to share this faith story with at least one person, and pray for an opportunity to share with someone that does not already know and love Jesus.

The only way to follow Jesus and point others to Him is to become a servant. There is no way around this. Jesus came to serve rather than be served, and we are to do the same. As we seek to bless others, we look for ways to serve others. Mission projects and mission trips are important, but we are talking about a lifestyle and habit of serving that begins in your own community and ripples out. Serving neighbors, co-workers, classmates, and those that we meet in the community is a guaranteed way to bless others and point them to Jesus.

Action Step— Find at least one way to serve someone around you this week. Don’t settle for what is the easiest. Rather, look for a reasonable and genuine action that will show the love of Jesus in an impactful way.

For Jesus and his community, sharing a meal was an offer of lifetime friendship. While the experience around a table may not have the same implications for us today, it still has great power and impact. Making time and space in a busy, hectic, and disjointed world invites others into something that is increasingly scarce—true connection and the bestowing of worth to another. Jesus intentionally and even scandalously used meals as a critical part of his ministry and, when we do the same, we are likely to see people blessed, lives change, and perhaps people even come know and love Jesus.

Action Step— Begin a habit of opening your home for a meal with others. Don’t be overwhelmed about the future of what it will look like—just get started. Be intentional with the invitation and focus on the connection more than presentation.

We are effective in sharing the good news of Jesus when we lead with love, and love always begins with good listening. We must know the difference between hearing someone and listening to someone. Listening requires intentional presence and engagement. Listening becomes a posture and attitude—we become listeners who are open to understanding the experiences, hurts, and views of those in the community so that we can better share the truth of God with love and grace.

We must begin any mission with prayer. All of our efforts to serve God and others will fall short without God’s power. We start with prayer to make sure that we are prepared spiritually and moving in the right direction. We pray for God to move us toward the people that He wants us to encounter. We pray for certain places to be set free from spiritual strongholds that God may bring a harvest. Finally, we pray for perseverance to remain faithful to the people God sends us and in the places in which God plants us.

A Simple Christmas: Week 3 (Southaven)

The Christmas story continues as the angel, Gabriel, prepares Mary for her coming pregnancy. She is immediate afraid and “troubled,” not knowing what this will mean for her life. She is surrounded by turmoil in her nation and community, and now she is facing turmoil in her own life. With the future uncertain, she is encouraged to know that God’s plan is good—it is for good for the world and good for her. Even without understanding or knowing what to expect, she is able to have peace knowing that God is in control.

The Christmas story begins with the hope of a child, but it is not the child that you are thinking about. That part of the story is still to come. The story begins with Zechariah and Elizabeth hearing the news that they will have a child in their old age. The child will be named John, and he will be a messenger of hope to those around him. God is on the move and something big is coming. John is confident that God is about to show His power and grace, and he invites the crowds to prepare with anticipation. We can also be confident that God is on the move, and we need to prepare to receive God’s great gift as well.

Ultimately, everything that God does is done for God’s glory. He deserves it all, and He receives it all. When this world comes to an end and the new creation is ushered in, all of Heaven will be WORSHIPPING God. That is what we are created for! This means far more than singing a few songs on Sundays—it is a life fully surrendered to God on a daily basis. And God doesn’t expect us to figure this out or work it out on our own. He knows that we can’t do it on our own. SO…God gives us a grace that enables and empowers us to live for Him.

One of the strongest forces preventing us from living the abundant life is the power of guild and/or shame. Many of us are holding back from all that God wants for us because we continue to believe the lie that we are disqualified. Yes, the truth is that every one of us are unworthy. Yet, in His grace, God sent Jesus to take our place and cover us with His worthiness. God has done everything needed to forgive ALL of our sin (past, present, and future). We need only to confess and receive the forgiveness that is already offered. Because God forgives, we can live healthy, whole, and joyful lives—forgiving ourselves and others because God forgives first.

The foundation of God’s grace is that He desires to connect and be in relationship with us even though we are broken, sinful, and unworthy. The only reason we have to seek God is knowing that He allows us to find Him. In fact, He seeks us out before we ever look for Him. Knowing that He desires to be in restored relationship with us, that He invites us to find Him, and that He embraces us in our brokenness, we can have the courage to seek Him with all that we have and all that we are.

When you pour the foundation of a house, it’s final. You can’t reshape it later. It defines everything that will be built on top of it. The same is true for our lives. If Jesus is the blueprint, then he also sets the form of our foundation. Following him isn’t just about checking the right boxes to get the life we want; it’s about aligning our whole way of life with his. This kind of deep commitment doesn’t just influence our choices—it transforms them. It reshapes how we love our spouse, raise our kids, spend our time, and even what we long for.

One of the most exciting parts of building a home is dreaming about what it will look like. Seeing those dreams drawn out in a blueprint helps your mind picture the finished product, and that blueprint becomes the guide for every step that follows. In the same way, we all carry a mental blueprint of what we think our lives should be. For followers of Jesus, he is the ideal human—the true blueprint that shapes everything. As Christians, we must shift our vision of the ideal life away from the patterns of the world and align it with the life and character of Jesus.

Life is challenging, painful, and difficult. Sometimes we believe that following Jesus will make that pain and difficulty be lessened or even go away. This leaves us surprised and disappointed when we discover that a life of following Jesus may sometimes be even more difficult than what we experienced before. But it should be no surprise to us. When we begin to take spiritual ground from the enemy of our souls, we should expect push back. When we speak truth to a work that loves lies, we should expect animosity. And when we submit our bodies to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, we should expect some growing pains. But the reward is worth it! God wins, our true home of heaven waits for us, and we will be rewarded for every act of true faith. So, we press on toward the prize and we encourage each other to keep going in faith. While discouragement may come our way, we don’t have to give in. We stay the course and keep our eyes on the prize.

Fear—it is one of the most powerful forces on earth, and it often prevents us from stepping faithfully into the calling of God on our lives. We fear messing up, falling short, not being qualified to succeed, or just being stretched beyond our comfort level. At the heart of this attitude is a lie and misunderstanding. The lie that drives our apathy and lack of action is that our success or failure is based on our ability, skill, and/or knowledge. This is not the case. The success of our calling is based only on our willingness to obey and trust God, knowing that it is God’s ability, skill, and knowledge that bring true and lasting results. In short, as you trust in Jesus and submit to the Holy Spirit, you ALREADY have everything that you need to do all that God calls you to do.

Every Jesus follower is called by God to join with Him in His work of redeeming the world through the Good News. What this looks like is different for every person according to the spiritual gifts, relationships, experiences, and environment given to us. While this invitation can sometimes be understood by a job title (pastor, teacher, physician, etc), it is often much bigger than any job title could describe. To discover your calling, you must look at the whole of your life. With your purpose discovered, you can apply that to every situation and relationship—job, family, hobbies, roles, etc.—knowing that your calling goes with you to each place. And best of all—we know that God is working every circumstance for good as we pursue that call to glorify God and make Him known.

The purpose of life is to worship and glorify God is ALL that we do. We live this out in community with other believers in the church as our lives are transformed by the Holy Spirit. To equip us for this purpose, the Holy Spirit gives us Spiritual gifts to build up others in the church and the mission of the church. These supernaturally given abilities are not just talents or traits that we develop through hard work and practice. They are Spirit given gifts such as teaching, preaching, leading, prophesying, healing, miracle working, praying in faith, and mentoring others for spiritual growth. Each of the gifts are equally important and necessary for our shared mission, and embracing the God given gifts enables us to step more fully into the exciting and adventurous life into which God invites us all.

It has been said that the two most important days of your life are the day that you are born and the day that you discover WHY you were born. God has a purpose of every person. Ultimately, we exist to worship and glorify God with all that we do—first by receiving the salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and then living a life of worship in response to God’s gift. To that end, God creates us uniquely—on purpose, with purpose, and for purpose. We have unique personalities, talents, gifts, and passions that are designed to impact others for good and worship God for His glory. Living in God’s design for our lives gives us ultimate freedom and joy as we finally live according to our Creator’s design.

Holy Spirit: Week 4 (Southaven)

As Jesus is teaching His disciples about the Holy Spirit (John 14-15), He instructs them to stay connected to Him like a branch is connected to the vine. The implication is that we cannot have spiritual life without a true connection to Jesus through the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul builds on this metaphor in His letter to the Galatian church as he instructs them to pursue true life in the Holy Spirit rather than engaging in what the flesh may want. And according to Paul, the signal that we are living by the power of the Holy Spirit is “FRUIT.” This fruit is an all or nothing gift because it comes from a life connected to the Holy Spirit. This singular fruit (not plural, even though it has many characteristics) is what characterizes the Holy Spirit as well as all who live in submission to Him. These are not talents that we develop, but traits that grow within us as we submit more and more to the Spirit’s presence, power, and purpose in our lives.

The Holy Spirit lives within every person who has faith in Jesus. Yet, many of us are not living in the power of the Holy Spirit, at least not fully. Instead, we limit our openness and put up barriers to the work that God would do in and through us. Barriers like ongoing and willful sin, doubt, pride, fear, and apathy prohibit us from experiencing the full transformation that God offers. We can and should remove these barriers as we walk in faith. Through acknowledgement, confession, surrender, and obedience we can see the Holy Spirit do more in and through us than we could ever ask for or imagine.

Jesus told His disciples that it was better for Him to return to heaven so that they would receive the Holy Spirit. This is HARD to believe and even harder to accept. How could a spirit that you cannot see be any better than looking at, listening to, and living with God in the flesh!?! As hard as it is to believe, we indeed are in a better position to live faithfully with Jesus on the throne and the Holy Spirit living within us. With His presence and power, the Holy Spirit invites us, teaches us, corrects us, empowers us, and intercedes for us. Just like the first disciples, we are given understanding and ability to follow Jesus in ways that we could never accomplish in our human effort.

Holy Spirit : Week 1 (Southaven)

The Holy Spirit is, for many of us, the most neglected and unrecognized person of the Trinity. While the three persons of God is a mystery that is beyond our understanding, we need to embrace God in His fullness—Father, Son, AND Holy Spirit. Embracing Holy Spirit as a person rather than “it” allows us to connect with God more fully as our Creator, Savior, Lord, and Redeemer. We do not have to live a life disconnected from the power and presence of God. Rather, by embracing Holy Spirit and surrendering to His presence both around us and in us, we can be with God and even one with God.
