<itunes:summary>
Last Saturday night, there was a mass shooting in Round Rock. Those words don’t even belong in the same sentence. Mass shooting. Round Rock. It just sounds wrong.

This is not a big urban center. This is our home. This is where our kids go to school. This is where we go to the park, go swimming, and have festivals to celebrate our diversity and the beauty and wonder of our city. It’s where we go for the 4th of July fireworks…and, in days gone by, for the cardboard boat regatta.

Mass shooting. Round Rock. The words just don’t go together. Two dead. Fourteen hospitalized.

Mass shooting. The words are jarring.

We don’t know all the details. We don’t even know if the shooter was from Round Rock.

But now there is a tear in the fabric of our city. It will be mended because, well, this is Round Rock…but there will be a scar.
</itunes:summary>

Well, it's like a lot of life. Often all it takes is one person to pull things off course, to keep things from working as smoothly as they might.
TUNA NOODLE BRICK

 <itunes:summary>
Many years ago when I was a camp cook, I had a helper. After working together for a few weeks and watching him gain confidence, I decided to delegate some work.

I told him that we would be feeding the 400 kids at the camp tuna noodle casserole. He assured me that he had it well in hand, but when I returned, each one was like a tuna noodle brick!

Here's what I learned: first don't assume anything. Don't assume that somebody knows what you know unless you check with them beforehand.

Second, communication is key. Unless we listen to each other, ask questions to clarify, or check to see if we have gotten it correct, we can't guarantee that actual communication has taken place.
</itunes:summary>

Yolo stands for “You only live once.”

As people of the way, as followers of Christ, we have a Yolo bypass. We can bypass the idea that you only live once because we know that there's more than the life that we're living here on earth right now.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
A couple of Friday nights ago, I watched a ball game at Dell Diamond. For one pitch, it was a fastball, and the ball glanced off the bat straight into the umpire’s face mask. It threw the umpire back several feet and knocked him flat on his back.

That umpire was down!

The other umpires ran to his aid and cared for him before walking him off the field.

I mention this not so much because the umpire got hit, but because the others ran to help him immediately. They were there for him.

You never know what's going to hit you in life, whether it be a baseball to the head or something else, but you do know that you won't be going it alone.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
Every week I go to lunch with the same guys, and the other day we go to a restaurant to meet and pray. Now I knew that the food that I was going to be eating had the potential to be messy. So I tucked my necktie into my shirt so I wouldn't get anything on it. Well, about three bites into the meal, I spilled food right where the buttons are on my shirt. I luckily was able to hide the spot with my tie once the lunch was over, but I was subconscious about it the rest of the day.

How often do we hide the spots in our lives? We try to put up a good front; we don't want anybody to know about the silly or stupid, or wrong things we have done. We try to cover them up so that no one will know.

It turns out that there will always be people who are better off than you. On the other hand, there will always be people who are worse off than you.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
Many years ago, I backpacked through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Part way through the night, I woke up to the sound of rain. Which was strange because I didn't feel any droplets of water. I had a small flashlight, so I turned it on, only to see about 25 mice atop my sleeping bag.

Sometimes things are not what they seem. I had thought that it was raining, only to find out it was an extended family of mice.

How often have we thought that things were one way, and they turned out to be another?

Happy Valentine's Day.

It turns out that there will always be people who are better off than you. On the other hand, there will always be people who are worse off than you.
</itunes:summary>

CABIN ON THE BLUFF

 <itunes:subtitle>WEEKLY THOUGHTS</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>PASTOR DAVE KOPPEL</itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
Recently I spent a few days in a little cabin on a bluff — and I arrived just as the ice storm hit a couple of weeks ago. When I opened the door, I discovered that the interior temperature of the cabin was the same temperature that it was outdoors - just about 30°.

So I turned on the wall unit, set it on heat, and some air came out of it that was not entirely cold, but a least it was warmer, and gradually the cabin reached a livable temperature.

I’m telling you this, because sometimes things, like brisket or prayer, take a while. But God always listens. God always answers our prayers, it's just going to take a little while.

Happy Valentine's Day.

It turns out that there will always be people who are better off than you. On the other hand, there will always be people who are worse off than you.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
Today is Valentine's Day. Some people think this is the greatest day ever. Some people think it's the worst day ever. Dating can be kind of confusing. Relationships can be challenging.

Fortunately, God has written us an incredible love letter, the Bible. You can start with whichever gospel you like and when you think about it, God has loved you, through actions, your whole life.

So regardless of whether or not you have a Valentine today, the one thing you have that is most important of all is God's love. It's not going to come and go like a feeling, but it's here to stay, no matter what. God is committed to you, and nothing will ever change that.

Happy Valentine's Day.

It turns out that there will always be people who are better off than you.
CYCLING ADVENTURES

 <itunes:subtitle>WEEKLY THOUGHTS</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>PASTOR DAVE KOPPEL</itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
One Saturday morning I got up early and went to the velodrome. Well, the first time I went around the track I slowed down, made the right turn, and realized I did not have enough speed to get up the hill. I had to walk it from halfway up. The second time wasn't any better. So the third time I went around the track, I decided to switch both sets of gears at the same time. If you've ever ridden a bicycle you know that this is a really stupid idea.

I was having a really bad day, and it wasn’t even 9:00 in the morning yet. I thought, “Why should these other people have all the fun while I had to fight with my chain and get grease and prickers in my hands?”

It turns out that there will always be people who are better off than you. On the other hand, there will always be people who are worse off than you.
</itunes:summary>

He was going on and on about different aspects of his life, and a trip that he took, and I responded to him and raised a couple questions, but I wasn’t sure he heard me with the poor cell reception.

Well after a while I realized he must have been talking to somebody else. He must have called me by accident while he was in the conversation with this other person.

He probably had no idea that I was listening in on his conversation, thinking that it was meant for me.

But imagine if you could listen in on people's lives. Imagine if you could hear what they're thinking about. Imagine if you could hear what they're thinking about you. Would you want to know?
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:author>PASTOR DAVE KOPPEL</itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
Twenty six years ago I spent time with my then 93 year-old grandmother. I said, "Grandma, you've seen a lot of tough times. What was the roughest time? Where did you have the most difficulty?” She turned her head toward me and she said, "Oh, I've forgotten."

It’s not that she was forgetful at all – she just let go of the hurt and the pain. <itunes:summary>
Taylor Swift’s new album “Midnights” just dropped this week and there's one line that really caught my attention: “Everyone will betray you.”
I would guess that happens to all of us at some point in life. People will disappoint us. And we have a choice at how we're going to look at life, how we're going to deal with what's coming.
We can be like Taylor Swift’s antihero alter ego and go through life believing that everyone will betray us. On the other hand, we can go through life expecting the best of people, knowing that occasionally we'll will be disappointed, but still being able to enjoy our relationships and trust each other, even with a couple of bumps in the road from time to time.
It may not be perfect, but it beats the alternative.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
At our youth gathering in July in Houston, we had an opportunity to go to the Museum of Natural science. I really enjoyed the exhibits being with a group of about 50 teenagers. What I enjoyed the most was the sheer enthusiasm of the people we met there.

When we went into the precious gems vault, the security guard at the entrance told us to make sure that we saw the world’s third largest gold nugget and the Opal, valued at $40 million. He was so excited about it and wanted to make sure we saw all the museum had to offer.

We also ran into a man, Mr. Rich, a docent at the museum, who was brimming with enthusiasm about gems, minerals, and dinosaurs. He told us to look at the dinosaur fossils and how we could tell which ones were genuine fossils and which ones were reproductions. (I’ll give you a hint—it has to do with the metal structures around the feet holding up the skeletons.)

At one point, he pulled a smooth stone out of his pocket and said, “Touch this stone!” We did just that, and he gleefully exclaimed, “You just touched dinosaur poop!” He was so excited. And then he told us that dinosaurs still exist on earth—birds! And he said, so when you’re having Kentucky Fried Chicken with your family, you’ll know it’s Kentucky Fried Dinosaur!”

These two men truly loved their jobs. They were so excited to share information with us and wanted us to be excited too.
</itunes:summary>

ROAD CREW FLAGMAN

 <itunes:subtitle>WEEKLY THOUGHTS</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>PASTOR DAVE KOPPEL</itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
One of the more interesting jobs I had as a young man was a flag man with a road crew. This job was a longing, well-traveled main road with a speed limit of about 45 or 50 mph. The crew was putting in in large pipe about eight feet underneath the road surface.

It was a summer job, and it was hot outside. Sometimes I felt like my shoes were on fire on the hot pavement. It was also the kind of job where you really couldn’t take breaks throughout the day very well. You keep traffic moving, pay attention to ensure the road workers are safe and do your best to keep a good attitude.

OK, here’s one of the realities of the job: some people smile and wave at you, and some try to hit you. I’m not kidding. Some people try to make a game of it to see how close they can get to the flag man. This is how one fellow put it, “Some days you are the hydrant, some days you are the dog.” More than once, I had to jump into the hole to avoid being hit by a car.
</itunes:summary>

Not only did I connect at a deeper level with some of our youth, but I was also able to connect with other kids I had just met.
There's a passage in the Bible that says with the measure that we give; the same measure will be used for what we receive. <itunes:subtitle>YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:author>PASTOR DAVE KOPPEL</itunes:author>
 <itunes:summary>
Of all the jobs that I have had, one of my least favorites involved directing traffic as people were leaving a 10-theater multiplex cinema. No matter what, you can’t make everyone happy. People will think that they should go first, and when you have three lanes of traffic coming from three different directions, and each think that they have the right of way, and people are impatient and think you let too many cars from the other lanes go before the cars in their lanes…people get upset, and they call you names, and they still try to cut in line. (Think back to trying to get out of Old Settlers Park after the July 4th fireworks show.) Directing traffic is a thankless job. You simply can’t make everyone happy.
</itunes:summary>
