The DANGER with mysticism

Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,  and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

The DIFFICULTY with asceticism

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—  “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

The DELIVERANCE with Christ

This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

Self-control includes spiritual discipline, restraint, curbing fleshly impulses, and mastery over one’s desires and passions.

Self-control is not self-manufactured. Self-control is Spirit-produced.

Works of the Flesh vs. Fruit of the Spirit.

In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul supplies a list of sins he calls the “works of the flesh.” Paul uses the word “flesh” to describe all the parts of the body that can be used as instruments of sin.

·     Eyes—what you look at.

·     Ears—what you listen to.

·     Mouth—what you say.

·     Hands—what you do.

·     Feet—where you go.

·     Mind—what you think.

·     Heart—what you desire.

Questions to Consider

·     In what areas of your life are you not surrendering to the Spirit’s power?

·     In what areas of your life are you running aimlessly and beating the air?

·     Where are you spiritually undisciplined?

·     If you were to fall into an area of sin, where would it be?

·     What are you doing to guard yourself in that area?

·     Are you constantly surrendering that area to the Spirit’s control?

·     Are you as disciplined about being in the Word as you are about hitting the gym? 

·     Are you constantly submitting your flesh—the instruments of your body—to the Spirit’s control?

1.   God continually confirms our faith.

When God calls us to the next big thing, he doesn’t ask us to step out mindlessly. He provides everything we need to take steps of fresh faith.

God is always working in our life. He uses the past as the basis of our faith. We know God will be with us tomorrow because he was with us yesterday. As we moved forward, he provided a new dose of faith daily.

2.   God uses broken people to do extraordinary things.

A study of the book of Genesis will introduce you to eight people who end up in Hebrews 11, where we see what genuine faith looks like, and all those people—well, let’s just say—their lives are a little messy. Do you know who is in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11?

How could God use a prostitute? Well—he called her to himself. He confirmed her faith with his Person. God transformed her life, and she became a new creation.

God revealed himself to Rahab and confirmed her faith by what he did at the Red Sea and Amorites. James 2:25 says that her faith was proven by hiding the spies and becoming a part of the nation of Israel. And…Rahab is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matt. 1:5)

The response from the tribes was both enthusiastic and solemn. They agreed to keep their part of the agreement. Any rebels would be executed. They did not want fear and sin festering in their tribes.

They based their agreement on two conditions. First, they had to witness God’s work in Joshua’s life as they had seen God work in Moses’ life. Second, Joshua had to demonstrate strength and courage as a leader.

Joshua assumed leadership when he was in his mid to late seventies. Some commentators believe he was in his eighties. He served as Moses' assistant for four decades, but he had never led at this level.

The Lamb of God did not remain in the grave. He rose from the dead! And the resurrection changes everything! Through our passage from death to life or when he comes again, Jesus will take us to be with him forever.

The work of Jesus as the Lamb of God and his victory over death gives us the basis for our peace in the midst of life’s challenges.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. To illustrate what patience looks like, James provides three examples.

The Farmer: Trust God to do his work (James 5:7)

The farmer planted his crops right after the early rain in October and then waited for the seed to take root and sprout. He depended on God for the sunshine and moisture. The late rains in March/April provided what was needed to produce a bountiful crop. The farmer had to wait patiently for God to do his work.

The Prophets: Trust God to keep his Word (James 5:10)

One of the toughest jobs in the OT was to be a prophet. Often, they delivered a message that few wanted to hear and fewer wanted to believe. Moses had to endure the complaining and grumbling of people for 40 years. Jeremiah was called the weeping prophet. Along with his lengthy prophecy, he wrote the Book of laments (Lamentations). He was ridiculed, rejected, and thrown into the mud of an empty cistern with no food or water. Daniel was thrown into a den of hungry lions. Zechariah was put to death in the temple (2 Chron. 24:20-22).

Job: Trust God even when you don’t understand (James 5:11)

Job was a righteous man who lost everything—except his wife—but she told him to curse God and die. His friends were certain that Job had committed a sin. And although he suffered, God never explained why. Still, Job remained steadfast in his trust (Job 13:15).

In today’s passage, James describes the wealthy who live apart from God. Their demise is a grim encouragement to the poor Jewish believers being taken advantage of. And the demise of the godless rich serves as a stark warning to those who follow Jesus.

Every person used to live in darkness. This is the doctrine called Original Sin. We don’t become alienated from God because of our sins. We are born as sinners in need of a Savior (Eph. 2:1-3). Paul refers to our state before Jesus as a state of darkness. In our darkness, we are confused (Job 5:14), live in spiritual ignorance (John 1:5) and spiritual blindness (2 Cor. 4:4). Left to ourselves, we are satisfied to stay in darkness (John 3:19).

At some point in the believer’s life, Jesus came. He met us where we were and shone his light on our sinful hearts allowing us to understand our need of him (2 Cor. 4:6). He “delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Col. 1:13-14).

Ephesians 5:8b-10

When believers are transferred into Christ’s kingdom, we are to “walk as children of light.” Since Jesus is the light of the world, whoever follows him walks in light (John 8:12). The believer strives to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord doing what is good, right, and true.

Ephesians 5:11-14

Part of living a life pleasing to God involved refraining from parting in the “unfruitful works of darkness.” Paul has already described six works of darkness in 5:3-4 and these works are seen throughout Scripture.

A Definition of Worship:

Worship: Honoring God moment-by-moment in response to his work and his Word.

Worship is such an all-consuming part of the Christian life that in Scripture, there are many words to describe it. Here are seven Hebrew words used to explain aspects of worship.

Halel—to boast, rave, celebrate.

Zamar—to celebrate in song and music.

Tehillah—breaking out in spontaneous song.

Nehemiah traveled from the capital of the Persian Empire to Jerusalem—about a thousand-mile journey—surveyed the walls, designed a re-building plan, recruited strategic leaders (who recruited others), did a masterful job at delegation, and started a massive repair and rebuilding project. Even in the face of significant opposition and threats of military attack from enemies, the project was finished in fifty-two days.

Nehemiah held a high position in the Persian Empire when God called him to a greater endeavor. The walls around Jerusalem had been destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C., leaving the city without protection, security, and identity. Now, 140 years later, it was time to rebuild the walls. In Nehemiah 3, the true leader did what leaders do best.  Nehemiah recruited a team of proven leaders to lead the rebuilding efforts. He placed them at strategic spots along the wall and delegated the work to them. But starting in chapter 4, those involved in the effort started hearing voices.

THE VOICES OF DOUBT

Anti-Jewish agitators were “angry and greatly enraged” that the rebuilding project was underway (Neh. 4:1). Their voices delivered statements that challenged the ability, wisdom, leadership, and resources of the Jews (Neh. 4:2-3).

THE VOICES OF FEAR

Israel’s enemy threatened war to stop the work (Neh. 4:6-8). They said that the Jews working on the wall “will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work” (Neh. 4:11). Even the Jews in the surrounding areas told the Jews working on the wall to stop and flee to safety (Neh. 4:12)

THE VOICES OF DISCOURAGEMENT

Israel had been all in (Neh. 2:18) and worked with determination to rebuild the wall to half its height (Neh. 4:6). But the enemy wore them down physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Their strength began to fail, and they were ready to give up (Neh. 4:10).

Voices of doubt, fear, and discouragement will wear us down. But Nehemiah, the leader, addressed the voices head-on.

·     Strong leaders followed Nehemiah because of his heart, passion, and purpose.

·     Nehemiah had the confidence to recruit leaders better than him. “Insecure leaders” is an oxymoron (See 2 Chron. 24:4, 13).

The second thing we learn about Nehemiah’s leadership in this chapter is that he was a master at delegation. He got the right people around him and strategically organized them.

·     He made sure there was a sense of community (See Neh. 3:1-2, 4. The phrase “next to them” is used 12 times in the first 10 verses of Neh. 3.

·     He had people rebuild the areas that were important to them. For example, the priests rebuilt the Sheep Gate (Neh. 3:1). That was the place where sacrifices were brought to the Temple.

·     He had people repair the walls close to their homes (Neh. 3:23-24, 28-30)

·     He had groups from outside of Jerusalem repair that section of the wall where few homes were built (Neh. 3:2, 5, 7).

·     Some goldsmiths, perfumers, and merchants built close to their shops and in areas that demanded more patience and funding (Neh. 3:8, 31-32).

1 Timothy 2:1-4 - First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Romans 12:18 - If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

As we enter the final week leading up to the election, pray for peace in the body of Christ, peace in our nation, and peace and discernment in every heart as we approach the voting booth. That as believers in Jesus Christ, as we stand firm for truth according to God's Word, the Lord would use us as ambassadors for peace, pointing all to Jesus Christ.

Imputation: God imputed (credited) our sin on Jesus. God imputed (credited) Jesus’ righteousness to us. 

Israel was longing for a military leader who could free them from life in Rome. God’s Messiah was a suffering servant who freed us from sin for eternity. Israel wanted a military and political leader God sent a Savior to defeat sin and death once and for all.

Now, of course, Jesus didn’t remain in the grave. He rose from the dead. We celebrate that every day. And we’ll celebrate that together next week.

Ezra set his heart…

Ezra “set his heart” to follow hard after God. The Hebrew word translated “set” הֵכִ֣ין means to be to be firm and steadfast—to be committed to do something. It describes a whole-hearted devotion. Ezra was determined that he would not be distracted or discouraged. He arranged his life to keep this commitment. Ezra followed the greatest commandment that Jesus taught about. He loved “the Lord his God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength” (Mark 12:29-30).

Ezra set his heart to study God’s Word

Study means to search out, to read repeatedly, to discuss. The Arabic version of the word means to “beat a path.” A path was made through a field due to the constant traffic. Studying means that we are beating a path by constant traffic in God’s Word.

Ezra set his heart to do God’s Word

God’s Word must be put into practice. James says that studying God’s Word and not doing it is like seeing your face in a mirror and then forgetting what you look like (James 1:22-24). We must be those who know God’s Word and do it.

Ezra set his heart to teach God’s Word to others.

Teaching the Bible begins in the home. Parents are the primary teachers of their children. This means that we must study and apply the Word so our children will see what we teach makes an impact in real life.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

This verse challenges us to stand our ground, but how can we remain “immovable” in the significant challenges of life? Note that 1 Cor 15:58 starts with, “therefore.” This means that the challenge to be steadfast is based on something Paul has said. We need to go back to the beginning of 1 Corinthians 15:58.

We have learned that the battle comes from three fronts: World. Flesh. Devil. In our temptations, one source may take the lead. It may be Satan taking the lead, the culture we live in enticing us, or the desires of the flesh. But all three are always involved in the battle. We learned from 1 Cor 10:13 that God will always give us what we need in every test and temptation.

Last time, we considered Genesis 3 where Satan's temptations came in the Garden. He led man to doubt God, become disillusioned with God, and finally, give into the desires of the flesh. In the Garden, Satan tempted man at his strongest.

Jesus demonstrated perfect compassion and never backed down on the truth. That is also our calling (Eph. 4:15, 1 Pet. 3:15).

This is the first part of a two-part series. In Part 1, we will build a framework for a Christian response and begin to survey Scripture regarding the issue of a same-sex relationship. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Jesus is not asking us to lose our personalities, die as a martyr, or live a life of self-rejection and self-hatred. We are not to live a life of asceticism. He is asking us to turn from the idol of self-centeredness.

“Take up his cross and follow me”—Daily Surrender

Jesus’ audience had seen a person take up their cross too many times. The condemned criminal would carry his own crossbar to the place of crucifixion—a painful, shameful death. Carrying one’s cross demonstrated submission to Roman authority that he had rebelled against and a symbol of agreement regarding the charge and verdict. Jesus used “carrying the cross” to mean that each day we are to surrender to God.

Save your life, you lose it. Lose your life, you save it.

The word for life is not bios by phyuche. Phyuche describes the soul—the part that wills, thinks, feels, and has the power to reason and emote. The word describes our personality with all our hopes and aspirations. God has made us find complete rest and contentment and satisfaction only in him. We are heirs of eternal life forever with God.

Gain the whole world and forfeit your soul.

The world here is the world system of evil that Satan heads up. The world—with its pursuits, pleasure, purposes, and people—is the place where God is not wanted.

Application

MARK 5: AUTHORITY. COMPASSION. POWER

The Authority of Jesus (Mark 5:1-20)

The man was desperate. Possessed by many demons, he lived among the tombs screaming and shrieking throughout the day and night. Too strong to be chained or shackled, he roamed naked through the area and cut himself with sharp stones. Then, he met Jesus. Jesus cast out the demons and allowed them to enter a herd of pigs. The man was transformed, but the townspeople were more concerned about money than miracles. They asked Jesus to leave the area. The formerly demon-possessed man spread the news of Jesus throughout the area.

The Compassion of Jesus (Mark 5:21-32)

The woman was desperate. For 12 years, she had suffered from a “discharge of blood.” The illness caused her to be “unclean” and live as a social outcast. She had spent all her money on physicians, but their remedies only resulted in her declining health. She was physically and emotionally weak. Her last hope was Jesus. Her faith, demonstrated by touching Jesus’ robe, healed her body and soul. Jesus said, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering (Mark 5:34)

The Power of Jesus (Mark 5:33-43)

Jairus was desperate; his daughter was dying. All his wealth and prestige as a leader in the synagogue couldn’t save her. He fell at Jesus’ feet pleading for healing. On the way to his house, the reports came that the daughter had died, but Jesus was not deterred. He raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead demonstrating his power over death itself.

Each of the four Gospels in the New Testament takes on a different “personality” and focus. Matthew (dated late 50s/early 60s) is written to the Jews to show that Jesus is the Messiah. Luke wrote a two-volume set (his Gospel and Acts) around A.D. 62. His Gospel is written to a Greek audience (in particular, Theophilus), proving that Jesus is the Son of Man. John, who wrote his Gospel around A.D. 80-90, makes his purpose clear in John 20:31: “…These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Mark was the first Gospel written, and it is dated in the A.D. 50s. It’s a hard-hitting and fast-paced account. Mark does not focus so much on what Jesus said, but on what he did. Throughout the book, there is a sense of urgency. The word translated “immediately” is found over 40 times in the book. He presents Jesus as the Servant. The key verse of this book is, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

Most scholars believe that Mark was led to Christ by Peter (1 Pet 5:13) and that his book is based on Peter’s sermons. Papias wrote in A.D. 140 that Mark was the “interpreter of Peter” and many early church fathers agreed.

Mark came from a wealthy family, and his mother was a well-known believer in Jerusalem. It is possible that the last supper was served in her home. Her house was a meeting place for the early church in Acts (Acts 1:13-14, 12:12).

Mark’s uncle was Barnabas. Mark joined Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey but returned home in the middle of the trip. When Barnabas wanted to take Mark on the second trip, Paul refused, and that ended in Barnabas and Paul splitting up. Later they reconciled.

Prayer is simply having a conversation with God. 

The motive of prayer is the issue of one’s heart (Matt 6:5)

Prayer is to be a personal conversation and not a way to impress others (Matt 6:6)

Prayer is not measured by the length or power of words (Matt 6:7)

God knows what we need. He desires to communicate with us (Matt 6:8)

Prayer is communication with God that involves both speaking and listening.

Part of effective prayer involves listening to God. 1 Samuel 3:10 is one example of how God initiates the conversation.

1 Samuel 3:10

And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

When the infinite God wants us to understand how he acts, he describes himself to us in human terms [anthropomorphism—ascribing human characteristics to God.] He knows that’s the only way we can understand who he is and how he acts.

Notice that God “came” to Samuel. Religion is about man’s attempts to get to God, but God is the One who always comes to us. The Father came to speak to Samuel. Jesus came to make the way to God. The Holy Spirit came to live within us. God comes to us today in our confusion, doubt, anger, hurt, or disappointment. God desires to have conversations with us.

The “Lord came and stood.” God waited for Samuel, and so he waits for us. God so desires to have conversations with us.

“Calling us at other times….” God is patient and persistent. God comes calling because he so desires to have conversations with us.

“Samuel, Samuel.” God calls us by name.

Isaiah 43:1

But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

One of the best explanations of prayer comes from a 17th century Frenchmen named--Francois Fenelon (August 6, 1651 – January 7, 1715).

Tell God all that is in your heart, as one unloads one’s heart, its pleasures and its pains, to a dear friend. Tell Him your troubles, that He may comfort you; tell Him your joys, that He may sober them; tell Him your longings, the He may purify them; tell Him your dislikes, that He may help you conquer them, talk to Him of your temptations, that He may shield you from them; lay bare your indifference to good, your depraved tastes for evil, your instability. Tell Him how self-love makes you unjust to others, how vanity tempts you to be insincere, how pride disguises you to yourself and others.

If you pour out all your weaknesses, needs, and troubles there will be no lack of what to say. You will never exhaust the subject. It is continually being renewed. People who have no secrets from each other never want for subjects of conversation. They do not weigh their words, for there is nothing to be held back; neither do they seek for something to say. They talk out of the abundance of the heart, without consideration they say what they think. Blessed are they who attain to such familiar, unreserved, conversation with God.

There are nine Hebrew words translated as “joy” in the Old Testament. They describe: 

A deep feeling

Taking delight in someone or something

Joyfulness that accompanies music

Taking pleasure in something

Shouting for joy

Where Do I Find Joy?

There are two kinds of joy: Temporal and Eternal

Temporal joy is found in the world. Temporal joy is not all bad. However, it will never bring lasting satisfaction (Eccl 2:1-2). And certainly, sin is enjoyable for a season (Heb 11:24-25), but the consequences are significant (Gal 6:7). 

Temporal joy is found in the world.

Joy for today and forever is experienced only in Jesus.

Temporal joy is circumstantial.

Eternal joy is positional.

DEVELOPING JOY

1. Engage daily in God’sWord in a meaningful way. 

2. Engage daily in meaningful prayer.

3. Obedience

4. Trials

5. Focus on Jesus

What was the joy of the cross? 

The joy of doing the Father’s will (Obedience).

The joy of providing the way to God (Salvation). 

The joy of paying sin’s penalty once and for all (Substitutionary Atonement).

The joy of defeating death and Satan (Resurrection).

The joy of celebrating his completed work (Exaltation). 

The joy of living in us through the Holy Spirit (Indwelling Presence). The joy of his return (Second Advent).

The joy in presenting us blameless us to the Father (Justification: Declared not guilty and righteous). 

Joy for today and forever is experienced only in Jesus.

Last week we addressed the question, “Why Does Evil Exist?” (click to view that sermon). Here is a quick review:

Why Does Evil Exit?

·     God did not create evil. Everything he created was good (Gen. 1:31). Evil is the absence of goodness.

·     God did not create us to be robots. He gave both angels and man free will (Gen 2:8-9, 15-17)

·     Some angels rebelled against his will (Isaiah 14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:12-18).

·     Adam and Eve rebelled against his will (Gen 3:6)

·     Sin and evil entered the human race (Rom 5:12)

This week we will address: “Why Does God Allow it?”

Why Does God Allow Evil to Continue?

God gave free will to the angels, and Satan (and his followers) rebelled and were thrown down from heaven (Isa 14:12-14; Eze 28:12-18). Adam and Eve fell for Satan’s lie (Gen 3:6), and sin and death became a part of the human experience (Rom 5:12).

The world “under the sun” that Solomon wrote about is not the way it’s supposed to be. Sin has invaded our planet, led by Satan—the father of all evil. Jesus called Satan “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31). Paul calls him “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2).

Ephesians 6:10-12

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Satan at work and man infected by sin - this is not the way it’s supposed to be. So, why doesn’t God put a stop to it?

In life under the sun, as soon as God stops evil, he stops free will - reducing man to robots. For instance, murder (a great evil) is the end of a process made up of lesser evils. If every lesser evil were taken away, man would be stripped of free will.

Why doesn’t God judge and remove from the earth all who commit sins? No one would be left!

Ecclesiastes 7:20

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

God did not create us as robots, nor does he turn us into robots. In a real world with real choices, the same natural laws that allow us to build cool resorts and develop medicines can be abused to make weapons, bombs, bullets, and illicit drugs.

Sometimes God allows evil or sin to test and grow us.

James 1:2-4

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Romans 5:3-5

…We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Sometimes God allows evil to discipline us.

Hebrews 12:5-8

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

God sovereignly uses evil to work his perfect purposes.

Genesis 50:20

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

The book of Ecclesiastes needs to be read backward. Life under the sun doesn’t always make sense, but the answer is always Jesus!

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Love and evil intersected at the cross. Jesus paid sin’s penalty fully and finally. One day, in God’s sovereign timing, he will call time on this world. Evil will be abolished, and those who know Jesus will enter eternal life.

Revelation 21:3-4

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

The two questions we want to address this week and next are these:

Why Does Evil Exist?

The Bible does not ignore the problem of evil (Eccl 4:1-3, Psalm 13:1, Habakkuk 1:2-4) - nor do secular philosophers. The Greek philosopher, Epicurus (341-270 BC), expressed the problem this way:

·     God wants to abolish evil, but he cannot, he is impotent.

·     God can abolish evil, but he does not, he is wicked.

·     If God can and wants to abolish evil, why is there evil in the world?

·     Therefore, God must not exist.

A conversation about the problem of evil must begin humbly. We are finite beings seeking to understand the infinite God.

Isaiah 55:8-9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Everything God created was good (Gen 1:31). So, how does evil exist?

·     Evil is the absence of good (like darkness is the absence of light).  The church father, Augustine, wrote, “Evil has no positive nature; but the loss of good has received the name ‘evil’.” (The City of God, XI, Chapter 9).

·     God gave man the freedom to choose. He did not make us robots. Theologian Peter Kreeft says, “To prevent all evil, you must remove all freedom and reduce people to puppets, which means they would then lack the ability to freely choose love” (Quoted in The Case for Faith, Lee Strobel, 42).

·     God also gave angels the freedom to choose. Satan and others rebelled against God and were cast from heaven (Isa 14:12-15, Eze 28:12-17).

·     Standing in the Garden of Eden with the freedom to choose, Adam and Eve gave into temptation and sin entered the human race (Gen 3:1-7, Rom 5:12).

·     All sin and evil are the result of man’s rebellion against God (Rom 1:18-32). C. S. Lewis wrote, “Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who much lay down his arms” (Mere Christianity)

God allowed for the possibility of evil because of his great love for us and his desire for us to love him freely.

·     God knows it is only possible to truly believe in him if there is a choice to believe he doesn’t exist.

·     God knows we can truly love if there is a possibility to hate.

·     God knows we can truly repent only if there is a choice to walk away.

·     God knows we can truly worship him only if there is a choice to refuse worship or worship something else.

God loves you so much that he gave you freedom, and when our freedom led us straight into sin, he sent his Son to pay sin’s penalty. That’s love!! That’s grace!!
