When it comes to the afterlife our culture has all kinds of different notions, some of them are loosely based on the Bible, but many of them are not. It's not uncommon for movies, cartoons, etc. to suggest that once a person dies their soul becomes an angel. In this episode Pastor Brian explains that while there may be some similarities between the souls in heaven and angels, people and angels are and will forever be two distinctly different creations of God.

Was Jesus close to his brothers and sisters?

Family is great, but we sadly don't always get along. Yet we may wonder how Jesus' half-brothers and sisters (the subsequent children of Mary and Joseph) got along with their perfect older brother? Although things started off rocky with Jesus' brothers and sisters at first rejecting him and ridiculing his claims of being the Messiah, Pastor Roloff reveals from Scripture that there was (at least in part) a happy ending to the story: in the end his mother, Mary, and at least two of his brothers, James and Jude, trusted in him as their Savior.

Do Enoch and Elijah already have their resurrected bodies?

As we go through childhood we become increasingly aware of ourselves and life around us. At the same time each of us eventually has to grapple with the concept of death. Our parents and others may encourage us to accept this unfortunate reality because "everyone dies," but as always there are exceptions to the rule! We read in the Bible that the Lord took two men, Enoch and the prophet Elijah, directly from this life into heaven, so that they never died. We wonder, why would God do this? One could also ask as one of our Sunday School students did, "Do Enoch and Elijah already have their resurrected bodies since they are currently with God in heaven?" Pastor Brian investigates.

Why did Jesus only allow three of his disciples to witness his transfiguration?

One day Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain where he gave them a glimpse of his glory as the Son of God. One of our Sunday School children wonders, "Why not allow the other nine disciples to see the same thing?" While the Bible doesn't give us a specific answer to that question, Pastor Brian suggests some possible explanations.

Did Jesus know, even as a baby that he was someone special?

Jesus was a one of a kind baby, and is a one of a kind person--with a human mother and God himself as his Father. He is also unique in that he is the eternal Son of God, who always was and is and will be. As God and man in one person Jesus' confounds our thinking, but he always knew that he was born into this world to be our Savior.

Why didn't the animals on the ark eat each other?

The account of Noah's and the ark is one of the most beloved children's Bible stories. Unfortunately, in an effort to make things more kid friendly, many illustrators don't do the Bible justice when rendering a picture of the ark. It is usually way too small and jam-packed with so many animals that they're sticking their heads out the windows and climbing on the roof. In reality the ark was a massive three-story barge as long as a football field designed to house Noah, his family, and two of every kind of land animal for more than a year. Give our podcast a listen and see what other Biblical (and common sense) reasons there are for why the animals didn't each other while on the ark.

Where is heaven?

Where is heaven? Is heaven in the sky and hell beneath our feet? To say so would be an oversimplification of what the Bible says. In this video podcast Pastor Brian explains that right now heaven is a real spiritual place that we can't see, but one day God will make it a rock solid reality.

Why don't we still have prophets today?

Many of the Bible stories from the Old Testament talk about prophets like Moses and Elijah and Isaiah. God spoke directly to these men and often used them to tell the future and at times do impressive miracles. In this podcast Pastor Brian explains that God allowed the prophets to do these extraordinary things to prove that they had been sent by God to deliver a message from him. God's use of prophets in the church has faded away because now we have his Word in the Bible.

Why didn't God stop the coronavirus?

Sometimes it takes a child to ask an adult-sized question. I'm sure all of us have wondered and prayed countless times during the past year, "Lord, why have you allowed the coronavirus to come upon our world and cause so much hardship, suffering, and death? Why didn't you stop it?" Today Pastor Brian explores how the answer to that question is less about God giving us a direct answer (because our wisdom and understanding can't comprehend his infinite plans) than it is about remembering who God is: he is our almighty, all-knowing, all-loving heavenly Father, who can work even something as awful as the coronavirus for our good.

When we go to heaven what do we do all day?

When you're young days can seem to drag on. When you're older time slips by too quickly. But even our best days and most exciting destinations wear on us and get boring after a while. We need something new. We need something to do to keep our attention.

Well when we contemplate that heaven is going to last forever, it might be tempting for us to lament, "I bet I'm going to get bored there real quick!" In this podcast Pastor Brian shows us from God's Word why that's never going to be the case.

Do angels really have wings?

Angels are fascinating to young and old alike. These spirit beings were created by God to be his special servants and messengers. We hear about them repeatedly on the pages of the Bible--filling the sky on Christmas Eve and appearing to the women at Jesus' empty tomb on Easter morning probably come to mind.

Artists often depict angels with wings, but is that how the Bible usually describes them? Do all angels have wings? Pastor Roloff goes to God's Word for the answers.

Why do people in the Bible live so long?

As we start a New Year we are reminded of time passing us by. It's appropriate then that our kids' video podcast answers the question, "Why did people in the Bible live so long?"

Moses records for us that before the Noah's Flood it was typical for people to live 800 or 900 years--a longevity we can't even fathom today. We'll see what God's Word says about what has changed since then and be mindful that we should all be ready each day for God to call us from this world to our eternal home.

When the world was still perfect did snakes have venom?

You have to hand it to kids--they are very observant and can be incredibly logical. With Abby's question this week I imagine her mind must have been thinking something like, "If snakes (today) have venom, and venom is used to kill other animals, what was it like at the beginning when there was no death in the world?"

This is one of those questions that the Bible doesn't answer directly, nor were any of us there to see or test what the perfect snakes were like before sin and death came into the world. In these cases the best we can do is admit that we are guessing but also do all we can to narrow those possible guesses down to being in line with what the rest of the Bible says.

Are all Bibles the same?

We parents know that children can be very perceptive and sharp. As our children learn more about the Bible and start putting Bible verses to memory, they might notice that sometimes the same verse is said or written slightly differently, which may cause them some confusion. Today Pastor Brian explains that Bibles are different not because God's Word has been changed, but because of differences in translation choices from the original Hebrew and Greek Scriptures.

Why can't I eat the wafer at communion?

From little on kids want to impress their parents and prove to them that "I can do what you can do!" So when our sons and daughters see mom and dad doing something, they often insist, "I want to do that too!" It's only natural then that when they see others receiving the bread and wine (or grape juice) at communion that they want to try it too.

In today's video podcast Pastor Brian explains that while there would be nothing wrong with trying the bread or wine/grape juice outside of the worship service, during the celebration of the sacrament Jesus' words have real power to give us his body and blood along with the bread and wine for our forgiveness. The Apostle Paul also puts some important stipulations on who should receive the sacrament so that they receive it to their benefit.

Do we say grace at all meals?

"Hey, you didn't pray! Dad, .... didn't pray!" Sometimes that's how it sounds at the Roloff household should someone swipe a bite of food before we all sit down to dinner. But is that how God wants it? Is praying before meals (or eating a snack or drinking a cup of water for that matter) some kind of a Biblical requirement to be rigorously enforced? What are the proper words to speak to thank God--does he want us to say the same thing every time or make up new? In this video podcast Pastor Brian emphasizes that what God wants first and foremost is an attitude of thanksgiving to fill our lives. Once we have that, everything else will fall into place.

Are there dinosaurs in the Bible?

What kid doesn't love dinosaurs? When I was a child there were two places on the children's reading level of the library that I knew by heart: the dinosaur section and the space section. Many of us think that there's no way that people and dinosaurs could have existed on earth at the same time because the dinosaurs were just so huge. Well the truth is the dinosaurs that make the headlines are only the big ones. The average size of the fossils that paleontologists find is something closer to a sheep or a chicken... hardly a T-Rex.

The Bible also makes it clear that God made all life on earth during the first week of creation--so we might wonder, where are the dinosaurs? This week's answer takes us to the book of Job (who lived after the flood). There we hear God tell Job to take a look at two magnificent creatures that he made--Behemoth and Leviathan--which sure sound like dinosaurs to me!
