Regardless of one's eschatological conclusion of this text, all Christians must unanimously conclude that there will be no time for repentance upon his second coming. Sin has been dealt with and the time to deal with sin personally through faith in Christ is now. If you die and see the Lord or he returns, without having dealt with sin by placing your faith in Jesus Christ, your only future is judgement. Only those eagerly awaiting Christ will be saved.

Remember that Hebrews has told us multiple times that the old covenant was given to us by angels as an intermediary, but now Christ has given us the new covenant, which is ministered to us no longer through angels, but through Jesus Christ himself and his heralds, first his apostles, then evangelist, pastors and teachers.

promises and titles those in the new covenant now possess?

Though the new covenant was promised to national Israel and Judah, national Israel and Judah were a type, and the Church is the antitype. National Israel and Judah were shadows, and the global church who is the body of Jesus Christ is the substance of the shadow. Said another way, Jesus is the one through whom this new covenant is made, and all those in Jesus are all those who are members of this new covenant. So, this new covenant promise is for God’s eternal people, who he calls the Church, composed of people from every nation, tribe and tongue, including of course, national Israelites, of whom the apostle Paul is a primary example of.

The new covenant is a pure group; everyone in it knows God. Therefore, we should only administer the signs of the new covenant (baptism and the Lord’s supper) upon seeing the fruits of new covenant membership (spiritual new birth seen through confessing to know God, loving his law, confessing sin, repenting of sin, trusting in Christ). We must remember the kindness and severity of God. We must remember his sovereign election, the Son’s definite atonement, and the Spirit’s sovereign regeneration/new birth.

What could turn an apostate back if the very Spirit of God ministering in the midst of the church through the many sacraments of blessings of the church didn’t produce the fruits of persevering faith in Jesus Christ? What else could win them over if not all the blessings participated in during the day-in and day-out fellowship of Christ through his people and ministry?

Like a loving father warns their children of the dangers that will tempt them ahead, so to our Father is lovingly warning us. Heed his warnings with gratitude and diligence. Receive the 5 noted blessings in our text with faith and gratitude. Do not harden your hearts, do not abandon the faith, nor his people. Rather, cling closely to Christ, his people, and the Christian confession, but remember above all, that as diligently as you may cling to Christ in good faith, Christ has bound himself to you from eternity past through eternity future by his work done at the fullness of time!

Those who dulled their hearing to the word of God are like a child who is barely paying attention, unskilled in any area, running right back into the ditch we righteously told them to stay out of. Often quick to complain, even cursing God, over their pitiful state of affairs. 

So many confessing Christians as children lose their faith by adulthood, lose even the elementary principles they once knew and believed, because they had such a shallow, pathetic foundation from such little hearing of the word of Christ, which can either be to due a lack of enculturation into a church filled with the word of Christ, or it can be due to dulled hearing that did not get disciplined out of them by loving parents. 

God’s very clear command to his teachers and preachers is to preach the word in season and out of season, remembering that man does not live off bread, let alone milk, alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God! And the sheep of God are to feast upon God’s word! 

Jesus knew that he was not merely the priest performing the sacrifice, but also the lamb of God who was to be sacrificed. He offered up prayers in the garden seeing if there was any other way atonement could be made for God’s people, but there was not, and he concluded your will be done. 

We see here Joshua was a type of Christ, leading the people faithfully and victoriously, keeping them until the end of his life, but Jesus keeps us til the end of the age he says, through the darkest valleys, the highest mountains, his Epic of redemption will leave no stone unturned, no nation unconquered, no heart unexposed by the sword of the word faithfully proclaimed and obeyed by his body, the Church.

If the process of heart hardening continues unabated, a day will arrive when the Word of God loses all impact on the person. Whether he reads it or hears it, it no longer serves as a voice of conviction. This final step is the refusal to repent. This is great moment of apostasy.  

In the face of the hardness of our hearts, the prophet Ezekiel brings a message of profound hope and assurance to those entrapped in the deceitfulness of sin. In Ezekiel 36 we are introduced to the promise of a New Covenant, one that Hebrews will continue to show is better in every way to the Old Covenant. Here in Ezekiel 36, we find a beautiful portrait of God's abundant grace and transforming power. The Lord declares, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws" (Ezekiel 36:26-27). 

These words speak of a radical transformation, regeneration in fact, that comes not by our own efforts, but by the gracious work of God. He does not merely clean up our old hardened sin sick hearts; He provides us with a completely new one, soft and responsive to His Word. Moreover, He puts His Spirit within us, enabling us not just to know His decrees but to live by them, not just to hear his voice, but to believe his voice. This promise, fulfilled through Jesus Christ, assures us that no matter how hardened our hearts may have become, God's grace in the New Covenant can bring about the renewal and spiritual transformation we desperately need.

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Believe in Christ and be saved!

The author of Hebrews, having already proven that Christ is superior to the angels, now proves that Christ is worthy of much more glory than Moses who is the honored father of the Jewish religious traditions. This great man Moses is merely a servant in God’s house, while Christ is both the builder and heir to the household of God – his elect people.

The work of Moses and the Old Testament sacrificial system served as a type and shadow of things to come in Christ. The death of Christ is understood as the perfect and complete substitutionary sacrifice it is through the lens of blood-bought atonement for sin commanded in the Old Covenant.

Christians are called to prove out our faith in all of life. We are encouraged to persevere through warnings against apostacy. Be faithful. Be obedient. Persevere to the end. Do not let trials and tribulations reveal true hardness of heart, and instead hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, repent, and obey for your good and God’s great glory.

God through Jesus Christ saves "everyone," the whole world, "all" without distinction, but not without exception.

To be a Christian is to be dead to the old self that was enslaved to sin, and not only dead to it, but resurrected to new life as a new creation having been cleansed in the waters of baptismand the preaching of God’s word.

the Creation, the light of our transfigured Lord Jesus, the light of our resurrected King, and

the light that will replace the sun and the moon for all eternity. Everything must be

reevaluated. We have to go back, and reread the whole thing. The Son would be exalted, the

Son has been exalted, the Son will be exalted. This has been the Father’s will since before the

world’s foundations were laid. His Son would be victorious, he would not lose, he would not

waiver, he would not be conquered. Every knee would bow, every tongue would confess, the

hearts of the whole world would turn to Him in great exaltation. All that has been made

would praise Him.

right now, as we gather to worship, as we speak, preach, pray and sing the word of God. He is

currently still, through his spoken word, chiefly the word of the Gospel of the Son of God, separating

light and darkness as he was in the beginning.

be in the King, is to be in the Kingdom. To be in the Son, is to be in the Father. To be in the Father and Son, is to dwell in the house of the Lord, it is to have your physical room reserved and personally prepared by the Son. Jesus is the way. Jesus is not only the map to the Father, but as our Hebrews text says, He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

God has gone to great lengths to make clear that new revelation would cease to come, not because revelation has ceased, not at all, but rather because God established a living foundation of revelation that the church is built upon... the prophets, the apostles, and Christ as the cornerstone. 

If this is something that will occupy our praise for eternity in Heaven, why is it so hard to accept with wonder in our theology today? It shouldn’t be. Let us allow the bible to inform our theology and not our thoughts and feelings and wandering desires.  

By seeking strength and support through alliances with their neighbors—akin to prioritizing economic growth over spiritual integrity—Israel demonstrated a lack of trust in God's ability to protect and provide for them. The older generation's choices jeopardized their children's future, leading them away from God. Fathers, the culture of your home is a direct reflection of your godliness. If you are filled with gratitude, patience, peace, joy, wisdom and righteousness, the home will be as well.

Wherever there has been failure to this point, remember, your redeemer lives, so seek him, and be redeemed. Confess your sins, be washed, and begin today to wash your family in the words of life, not as hearers only, but doers.

Encourage and command your children to place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repent from their sin, and follow Christ in the context of a healthy church as a baptized member of his body who remembers their Lord broken for them, his blood shed for them, in communion each week.

All Christian parenting is preparation for the Kingdom of God.

A Christian family and good Christian church are the greatest means of grace unto hearing the Gospel and being saved. And on and on the promises of the new covenant flow to our children’s ears and enculturate our children’s lives! We tell our children to receive these promises by faith, just like Abraham received them, just like Moses, just like the Apostle Paul, just like all the saints old and new, just like their mommy and daddy received them, just like their Pastor and their friends or siblings who have joined the church membership... the promises are theirs to receive by faith! 

As for the Children, we know they do not need to be taught sin, biblically they need to be taught the instruction, Gospel, fear, and discipline of the Lord because they are born absent of all those virtues and beliefs. By birth, they are selfish, undisciplined, ungodly, and the only restraint upon their often murderous hearts is their practical size and physical capabilities.
